In another rain-filled and lightning-delayed high school football game, the Hillsboro Indians claimed a 29-7 victory over Clermont Northeastern Friday, Sept. 21 at Richards Memorial Field.
The homecoming night victory improved the Indians to 5-0 on the season. CNE fell to 3-2.
Deon Burns put the Indians on the scoreboard with a four-yard TD run in the first period. Senior quarterback Mason Swayne set up the touchdown with a 46-yard run to the CNE nine-yard line. Burns took it the rest of the way. Reece Bloomfield added the extra point, and Hillsboro led the Rockets, 7-0, at the 8:58 mark.
The second quarter was interrupted when lightning was sighted in the southern sky at the 7:15 mark.
Following the half-hour delay, the Indians' offense combined for 77 yards on two plays for their second score. On a third-and-seven play, Swayne found a wide open Luke Middleton (who also played a great game on defense) for a 47-yard pickup. That moved the chains to the Rockets' 30.
On the next snap, Josh Keets raced 30 yards into the end zone for the Tribe's second touchdown. Hillsboro lined up to kick the extra point; however, after a CNE penalty, Coach Jack O'Rourke told his team to huddle up and run a play. Swayne pitched to Keets, who carried it in for the two-point conversion.
This was Keets' first of three touchdown runs of 30 or more yards. He added a third-quarter touchdown run of 30 yards and fourth-quarter touchdown run of 39 yards.
Hillsboro closed the first half with a 15-0 lead.
With 8:08 left in the third, Keets' second touchdown lifted the Indians to a 22-0 lead.
Cole Joslin put the Rockets on the scoreboard with his touchdown run at the 2:29 mark in the third period.
In the fourth quarter, Keets completed the scoring with a 39-yard touchdown run.
Hillsboro will host the Chillicothe Cavaliers on Friday, Sept. 28.
