The Hillsboro Lady Indians struggled to keep possession of the ball on Saturday afternoon, which helped the Chillicothe Lady Cavaliers control the pace of the game and hold on to the lead for all four quarters, as the visitors defeated Hillsboro, 46-26.

The Frontier Athletic Conference game saw the Lady Indians struggle with their inbound passing, resulting in the pressure by the Lady Cavaliers to amp up their offense with 23 of their 46 points coming off turnovers, as for the game Hillsboro committed 29 turnovers, compared to 14 turnovers by CHS.

“We struggled to find shots that we could make, and sometimes we just struggled to find shots, period. It’ll take more than the one day of practice we had coming into today to try to fix that, but we’ll have four days next week to see if we can get ready for next Saturday,” Hillsboro head coach JR Moberly said. “We want to dribble all the way around, into traffic, to shoot it with the right hand.

“The thing is Coach (Ryan) Hopkins has done a great job with ball-handling drills for us. We’ll spend 30, 45 minutes a day on that. It’s not that our kids can’t handle the basketball. To me, it’s our decision-making process. I think we’re trying to play faster than we’re capable of playing. We try to slow it down a little bit. Somehow we have to learn to play within ourselves and not too fast.”

Hillsboro had five players score points in their FAC contest, with Karleigh Hopkins leading the way with nine points. She also had three rebounds and was 3-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Also adding points for HHS was Kayden Watson with five points (one rebound, one assist, one steal). Three Lady Indians players scored four points apiece with Jordan Moberly, Kelsey Burns and Josie Hopkins rounding out the scoring. Moberly added six rebounds and one steal, and Burns had three rebounds and one steal. Josie Hopkins finished with four rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Lana Grover collected five rebounds and three steals for the Lady Indians. Also for the Lady Indians in the loss, Gracie Dean finished with two rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. The Lady Indians also saw Mackenzie Cosby collect two rebounds.

The first frame saw the Lady Indians outscored by an 11-8 score as the Lady Cavaliers scored first at the 6:45 mark with a bucket from Alysia Cunningham, and from that point forward the Lady Cavaliers never relinquished the lead.

Following two points by Chillicothe’s Makenzie Greene, Hillsboro scored their first two points of the game with 4:59 left in the first frame off a steal and layup by Watson. CHS answered with a 3-pointer by Julia Hall and then two points from Zoe Ford for a 9-2 CHS advantage with 3:00 left on the first-quarter clock.

Hillsboro scored their second bucket of the first with a layup from Josie Hopkins, who also later scored the final points of the first frame off a put-back bucket to bring HHS to within three points of the CHS lead at 11-8.

The second half saw HHS outscored by the Lady Cavaliers 11-6, with the Lady Cavs leading 22-14 at halftime. Scoring points for HHS in the second were Kayden Watson and Karleigh Hopkins, as Watson scored a two-point bucket and Hopkins went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.

In the third and fourth frames, the Hillsboro scored six points in each of the two quarters, while Chillicothe tacked on 12 points in the third and 12 points in the fourth. CHS led 34-20 at the end of three quarters and then gained the 20-point win with the 46-26 final score.

Hillsboro saw Burns score two points and Karleigh Hopkins make two two-point baskets in the third frame. In the fourth, Karleigh Hopkins scored five points and Watson had one point.

For the game, Chillicothe was led in scoring by Shawnice Smith with 10 points. She also added five rebounds, two assists, one block and four steals.

Greene finished with nine points, while Ford had eight points for CHS. Also for the Lady Cavaliers, Cunningham finished with six points and Meliah Johnson had five points. Having three points each were Julia Hall and Hayden Price. Rounding out the scoring was Aries Barnes with two points.

In the JV game, CHS defeated Hillsboro, 20-16. Olivia Johnson led CHS with seven points, and for HHS, Brynn Bledsoe led with six points.

Next for Hillsboro is a home FAC game on Saturday, Dec. 22 when they host the McClain Lady Tigers, with a JV start at noon, with the varsity game following. From there, the HHS boys freshman, JV and varsity teams will host the McClain Tigers for a total of five games played at HHS next Saturday.

“We have McClain here on Saturday, so back-to-back days in the white jerseys is a nice thing. Three of my kids put red shirts on before we came out and had to change because they’re so used to it,” Moberly said. “The Tigers come in, and they’re off to a great start. It’s really unfortunate – I hate that Maddy (Stegbauer) injured herself. She’s such a tremendous young lady and has worked so hard, and I feel for her, but I know she’ll continue to be a leader for that squad. I’m sure Coach Haines will have them ready for us on Saturday.”
