HILLSBORO — It was a tough night of basketball for the Hillsboro Lady Indians on Monday night as the young team continued to learn on the go in a 71-50 loss to the visiting Goshen Lady Warriors at Hillsboro High School.

Turnovers and extra opportunities for the visiting Lady Warriors put the host Lady Indians behind, as they unofficially totaled 29 turnovers in the loss, and they didn’t gain many second-chance opportunities of their own with around 12 first-half rebounds to their credit.

HHS trailed by a 23-10 score at the end of the first frame with Goshen leading early with a 6-2 advantage, but HHS came back as they tied the score at 6-6. Their first six points of the game came off a layup by Gracie Dean, a put-back bucket from Eden Edenfield and at the 3:33 mark it was Mya Bell with the put-back basket for the tied score.

Goshen answered with an 11-0 run that included a 3-pointer by Amy Myers to make it a 17-6 score with 59 seconds left in the opening frame. HHS broke the scoring run with a basket by Susanna Barney, but GHS ended the first frame with two more 3-pointer from Myers and Delaney Geary at the buzzer for the 11-point lead.

HHS held Goshen to 13 points in the second frame, but the Lady Indians scored 15 points of their own for a halftime score of 36-25 as HHS trailed by 11 points at the half. The Lady Indians were first to add to their point total in the second frame with a layup from Jaden Moberly, and again it was Moberly with two more points in the paint, with the assist by Brynn Bledsoe for a 25-14 deficit for HHS.

Hillsboro added a jumper by Rylie Scott, but the Lady Warriors answered with another 3-pointer from Myers, and later, as the second continued, it was Goshen building their lead to 33-20 with 3:41 left in the first half.

With 59 seconds on the clock, Reagan Eastes had a rebound and basket, and with 29 seconds remaining in the second frame, Bell brought the Lady Indians to the 11-point halftime deficit.

HHS scored 14 points in the third quarter, but Goshen was a little better in the scoring column with a 17-point third quarter for a 53-39 lead after three frames. HHS had a 3-pointer by Dean in the third at the 6:15 mark, and later it was Moberly sinking a jumper with 4:35 left in the frame for a 41-30 Lady Indians deficit.

Moberly added another two-point bucket in the third, and the final seven points in the quarter for the Lady Indians were all scored by Bledsoe. Goshen had two 3-pointers, both by Katrina Hopper, in the third quarter, as they held a 14-point lead after three frames.

The Lady Indians scored 11 points in the final quarter with Edenfield, Sinai Roberts and Bledsoe combining for those points. Goshen sank four more 3-pointers in the final frame, with three by Abby Strunk and one from Myers.

Goshen was led in scoring by Myers with 16 points (four 3-pointers), and next was Strunk with 14 points (three 3-pointers) and Hopper with 12 points (two 3-pointers). In all, Goshen totaled 11 3-pointers.

The Lady Indians’ leading scorer was Bledsoe with 13 points, while she also added three rebounds. Dean followed with nine points, while Edenfield and Moberly totaled eight points each.

The loss drops Hillsboro to 1-3 overall, as they are 1-0 in the Frontier Athletic Conference this season. Next on the schedule is a non-conference game on Thursday, Dec. 10 at Fayetteville.
