CHILLICOTHE –- A first half where the Hillsboro Indians allowed three touchdowns, had multiple turnovers and just weren’t in sync on the offensive side of the ball added up to a third straight Frontier Athletic Conference loss for the 2021 season.
The Week 8 game in Ross County against the Chillicothe Cavaliers saw the visiting Indians fall by a 35-7 score, where the Indians trailed 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and were never able to recover.
There were some issues with the scoreboard after the first play of the game, and when the delay in play was over, that is when the Cavaliers took control of the FAC contest and basically never looked back. CHS took nine plays to score the first touchdown of the game, coming around the 7:00 mark of the first quarter, completing an 80-yard drive.
The drive concluded with a 28-yard rush by Maxwell Lee of the Cavaliers on first down for the score. The PAT by Isaac Crawford left Chillicothe ahead by a 7-0 score.
Things didn’t go as smoothly for the Indians on their first drive, being held to -13 yards, then turning over the ball on third-and-23 when Chillicothe’s Michael Hicks picked off a pass with heavy pressure with 5:49 left in the first quarter.
Two plays later, the Indians regained possession of the football with Travis Ross recovering a CHS fumble on the CHS 7-yard line. That momentum was short-lived with the Indians fumbling the football on a botched handoff attempt, and the Cavs recovered the loose football with 3:34 left in the opening quarter.
Five plays later, the Cavaliers were back in the end zone, as the 19-yard drive ended with a run by Lee on a 5-yard rush with 1:16 left in the first quarter. The lead increased to 14-0 with the made PAT by Crawford.
Again, the Indians were held to negative yardage with a sack from the Cavs’ Carter Boltenhouse for a loss of 11 yards. After the Indians were forced to punt, and punter Dylan Rigsby sent the ball to the 29-yard line of Chillicothe, the Cavs were back on offense, and it wasn’t good news for the Indians.
One play was all it took for the Cavaliers to build onto their lead with a 71-yard reception by Tre'quez King with 8.4 left in the first quarter. The PAT sailed through the uprights for a 21-0 lead for the hosts.
Hillsboro’s lone touchdown for the game came with quarterback Chris Stout rushing for a 1-yard score on first-and-goal with 57.5 on the clock. The Rigsby PAT sailed through the uprights for a 21-7 score that stood until halftime.
Hillsboro was at negative yards for the game before their final drive in the first half, but that wasn’t the case for long. HHS began their scoring drive from their own 36-yard line and following an incomplete on first down, the Indians had a pass from Stout to Cameron Smart for a 25-yard gain and a first down.
Next in the drive was another pass from Stout to Smart, and the duo connected for an 11-yard play. Later in the drive, Ross had a 1-yard catch, then followed with a 10-yard run on third-and-9, giving HHS a first down on the CHS 17-yard line.
Stout followed with a 9-yard rush, and on second-and-1, Ethan Grooms had a 16-yard gain on a run to the 1-yard line. On first down, Stout barreled his way to pay dirt for the touchdown with 57.5 left in the second quarter.
HHS was shut out in the second half, and the Cavaliers scored two more touchdowns in the final two quarters of play for the 28-point win over the Indians.
The loss moves the Indians to 3-5 overall, with a record of 0-3 in the FAC. The Cavaliers improve to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the FAC standings.
Next for HHS is their ’21 home finale, as they are scheduled to host the Washington Blue Lions at 7 p.m. in FAC action. The Cavaliers are scheduled to host the McClain Tigers in their FAC contest next Friday, Oct. 15.
