The McClain Tigers are still atop the Frontier Athletic Conference standings as they rolled into Hillsboro for not only a conference showdown, but a match between two Highland County rivals.
Both teams wrestled tough in the match, but McClain was too strong in the final few matches, breaking a 21-21 tied score to win four of the final five matches to defeat the Indians by a 45-31 score.
McClain’s win moves them to 4-0 in the FAC and 11-1 overall, while the Indians are now 3-2 in the FAC duals. Paint Valley also wrestled in the event, where McClain won by a score of 69-0 and Hillsboro defeated PVHS, 66-12.

McClain’s wins also gives them no less than a tie in the FAC dual season.
“In the 45 years McClain has been wrestling, McClain has not won a dual championship in a season, so this is a big deal for us,” MHS head coach Shane Paul said. “Hillsboro is really tough, and they proved it tonight. We are tough too, though, so this was a good match. The crowd was into it on both sides, and the teams were both into it too.
“The 145 pound match was huge for us, as we were losing the match but turned it around and got the pin. That was a massive change when Thomas Retherford got the pin. Keegan (Rawlins) followed that with a pin, and Phil Waters followed that with a pin, so those last few matches, that is 18 points. We were running neck-and-neck for a long time in this match, and right there at the end we pulled away.”
The event consisted of 10 matches contested on the mat, while there were also four forfeits with both Hillsboro and McClain gaining two wins apiece in those forfeits.
“We had some kids go out there and wrestle tough and wrestle better than I thought we were going to,” HHS head coach Greg Rhoads said. “We got lax at times when we were up big or we didn’t lock a kid down, and things like that will come back to haunt you, especially in a team event.
“Overall, we wrestled tough, and for the most part, we hit our game plan.”
McClain gained the first win of the match with Kyler Trefz winning at 182 pounds with a fall in the first round with 9.2 seconds left on the clock for the win over Mason Lewis of Hillsboro.
Next, the Indians won with a decision to cut the Tigers’ lead in half with a 5-3 decision win by Deegan Boris over McClain’s Ethan Taylor. Boris and Taylor were tied at 2-2 after two rounds, but in the third Boris gained a point via escape and two points on a takedown to gain the two-point win.
Following a forfeit win by McClain’s Kade Rawlins at 220 pounds, the next match was the 285-pound match where Lane Cluff of Hillsboro won by pin fall in the first round over Kai Borrelli of the Tigers.
From there, there were three consecutive forfeit wins where McClain gained a victory at 106 pounds with Lucas Jansen, while HHS had wins by Tanner Warner at 113 pounds and Isaac Lewis at 120 points.
In the next match at 126 pounds, Dawson Jansen gained a win, 11-6 over Hillsboro’s Wade Remsing. Jansen led 4-1 at the end of the first round as he had a takedown and near fall. The second round was more competitive with Remsing having an escape and takedown.
The third round saw Jansen have an escape for a point and Remsing gain two final points on a takedown. Jansen’s win over Remsing tied the match at 21.
At the 132 pound match, Quinton Smith of McClain won with a first-round pin fall over Hillsboro’s James Coday.
From there, Hillsboro’s Scott Eastes defeated McClain’s Jake Krafthefer at 138 pounds by a 15-3 score for a major decision.
McClain had another victory by pin fall at 145 pounds where Thomas Retherford defeated Hillsboro’s Logan Hester by pin fall in the second round. Hester led after the first round by a 5-0 score after he had a near fall and a takedown.
In the second round, things changed as Retherford gained the win by pin fall, maneuvering out of a hold. Earlier in the second, Hester had two more points from a penalty and one point for an escape.
The 152-pound match saw the Tigers gain the win by a first-round pin with Keegan Rawlins winning over Cordell Covault.
At 160 pounds, Mason Stanley of Hillsboro defeated Zane Bode of MHS with a first-round pin fall.
The final match of the evening saw McClain’s Phil Walters defeat Richard Adkins of Hillsboro in the 170-pound showdown with a first round pin fall.
“The whole team stood out tonight,” Paul said. “Even when guys were on their backs, they fought back. Even in a loss, they fought back to where it was by four points instead of six. Really, even sometimes when you lose, the fight that you put up does a lot for the team as well.”
MHS has one FAC dual match remaining with Miami Trace, who are now second place in the conference with one loss. That match will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Miami Trace.
