The McClain boys varsity swim team remained undefeated on the season after winning a tri-meet against Hillsboro and Wilmington and followed that up with dual meet victories over New Richmond and Zane Trace.

The Lady Tiger Sharks picked up their first victory of the year by defeating Zane Trace and Bloom Carroll Monday night after finishing a close second in their previous three meets.

“I’m tickled to death on how well my boys are swimming to start off this season,” McClain coach Bradley George said “Tonight, there was little competition for the boys, but it gave us a chance to put our team’s swimmers head to head, and sometimes you get some really good competitiveness from that.

“Last week in a dual meet against New Richmond, I was very pleased with everyone’s effort, especially my two young breaststrokers, Justin McCray and Matthew Roush, who finished one and two.”

The McClain girls continued to swim well and easily defeated Zane Trace and Bloom Carroll after three impressive second-place finishes against some strong competition in earlier meets this season.

“I’m very happy with all of my girls right now,” McClain girls swim coach Katie Dettwiller said. “Everyone on the team has been dropping times in almost every meet that we’ve been in so far.

“In our two previous meets against Hillsboro and Wilmington and at New Richmond, everybody has swum great, especially the New Richmond meet, where we were beaten by 38 points last year but lost by just 14 this year. All of my girls are coming along nicely, but they know they still have a lot of things to work on as they continue to improve.”

Top individual finishers for the McClain boys in the meet Monday vs. Zane Trace were: Timmy Eleyet, first place, 200 freestyle (2:31.58), second place 50 freestyle; Avery Voss, first place, 200 I.M. (2:26.69), first place, 100 freestyle (56.42); Ethan Johnson, first place, 500 freestyle (6:16.27), first place, 100 backstroke (1:16.48); Johnny Free, first place, 50 freestyle (27.22), second place 100 freestyle; Matthew Roush, first place, 100 breaststroke (1:42.34), second place 500 freestyle; Cody Borsini, second place 200 freestyle; Noah Scott, second place 200 I.M.; Noah Tillis, second place 100 backstroke; and Justin McCray, second place 100 breaststroke.

The McClain boys also won all of the relay events in the meet. The final score on the boys side of the meet was McClain 126, Zane Trace 21.

Top individual finishers for the Lady Tiger Sharks were Mallory Sims, first place, 200 freestyle (2:31.18), third place 100 freestyle; Emily Parker, first place, 50 freestyle (27.67); Peyton Voss, first place, 500 freestyle (6:38.49); Lauren Fabin, first place, 100 butterfly (1:33.04), third place 200 I.M.; Crystal Hargrave, first place, 100 backstroke (1:25.40); Maria Onusko, first place, 100 breaststroke (1:34.09); Veronica Olaker, second place 200 freestyle, third place 100 breaststroke; Anna Raike, second place 200 freestyle, second place 200 butterfly; Erika Martin second place 100 backstroke; Heather Parker, third place 100 freestyle, fourth place 200 I.M.; Cheyenne Watson, second place 100 backstroke; and Carmen Cerdido, fourth place 50 freestyle.

The McClain girls also finished first in every relay event on the day. The final scores for the girls were McClain 140, Zane Trace 60 and Bloom Carroll 26.

“My kids are still dropping four to five seconds off their times, but they know our competition level will continue to get stronger from here on out,” George said. “Hillsboro and Wilmington both had some solid swimmers in that meet, which gave us several competitive contests.”

Dettwiller also echoed the competition factor will be tougher but quickly noted that her girls are swimming very well.

“These girls have been extremely supportive of each other so far, and our three foreign exchange student swimmers Jamie Discher (Germany), Dina Piponski (Serbia) and Carmen Cerdido (Spain) have all done really well for us.”
