HILLSBORO — Both the Hillsboro Indians and Chillicothe Cavaliers battled their way to 14 points each in the first half, as the two teams overcame multiple turnovers. The second half saw the visiting Cavaliers take their game to another level by forcing the Indians into more mistakes, resulting in the Indians’ third consecutive loss of the 2020 season by a 41-14 score.
With the six-game regular season at the halfway point, the Indians are now 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Frontier Athletic Conference. In their home opener at Richards Memorial Field on Friday night, the Indians were able to overcome miscues in the first half, but that wasn’t the case in the final two quarters as HHS totaled three turnovers for the game.
For the game, the Cavaliers had 373 yards of total offense, and the Indians finished with 252 yards total offense. CHS finished with 228 yards rushing as a team, and the Indians had 106 yards rushing.
Chillicothe (2-0, 2-1) led at the end of the first quarter, as their first touchdown of the game came with a pass from Kamron Smith to Keyon Williams with 7:54 left on the scoreboard. The PAT Jacob Coffland made the lead 7-0.
On the next offensive play for Hillsboro, they lost possession of the ball, with the Cavaliers recovering the football at the 7:34 mark of the first.
Though the Indians’ defense was forced to punt, when HHS regained the football five plays later, they lost it once again on a fumble on the CHS 41-yard line.
After Chillicothe’s Logan Snowden recovered the fumble, the Indians defense was there to equal the feat three plays later when the Cavs lost the football, which was recovered by Hillsboro’s Travis Ross with 2:42 still remaining in the first frame.
Though the Indians were forced to punt and so were the Cavaliers, it was Hillsboro’s time to shine as they gained their first touchdown of the game with 7:59 left in the second quarter. Other than the touchdown itself, the play that stands out in the drive was a 46-yard reception off a pass from Chris Stout to Nick Lewis on a first down play that took the Indians to the 8-yard line.
Two plays later, the Indians were celebrating in the end zone with Bryce Parsons pounding his way three yards to pay dirt with 7:59 remaining in the first half. The PAT by Nick Turner left the score tied at 7-7.
Later in the second, the Cavaliers forced a third HHS turnover of the first half with an interception by Joel Barnes, who was in perfect position for the football, taking the ball 46 yards to the Indians’ 4-yard line with 5:46 still left in the second quarter.
Two plays later, the Cavs held the lead with a 3-yard rush by Max Lee for six points with 5:22 on the clock. Again the PAT was good, leaving the Cavs in front at 14-7.
Hillsboro didn’t back down … rather, they battled back in the second quarter and added another seven points on a drive that went 44 yards on 10 plays, which was set up by a kickoff return that was retuned to the CHS 44-yard line by Ross.
The drive consisted of runs by Stout and Parsons, and a 6-yard rush by Parsons on third down left HHS on the 18-yard line for a first down. After a 2-yard loss, Stout rushed for 11 yards, then Parsons went for a 7-yard gain on third down, setting up a first-and-goal play on the 1-yard line.
Parsons scored his second touchdown of the game with the 1-yard rush with 1:02 left in the second quarter. The PAT by Turner went through the uprights, and the 14-14 score stood when halftime arrived.
For the Indians in the game, Stout was 8-of-16 for 146 yards and one interception. He was also sacked four times in the loss. Parsons finished as the Indians’ leading rusher with 22 carries for 87 yards, and next was Ross with eight rushes for 24 yards.
Lewis was the Indians’ leading receiver with three receptions for 65 yards, followed by Ross with three receptions for 39 yards and Cameron Roberts with one reception for 37 yards. Canaan Griffith rounded out the HHS receivers with one catch for five yards.
Then the second half arrived for the Indians, and it didn’t go as well with the Cavaliers dominating the final two quarters with 13 points in the third and 14 points in the fourth, while the Indians were shut out in those same quarters.
Leading Chillicothe in the air was Smith at 7-of-11 for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Smith also rushed the ball nine times for 58 yards and one touchdown. Tylin Scales led the Cavs in rushing with nine carries for 58 yards and one touchdown. Barnes was the receiving leader with one reception for 57 yards and one touchdown, while Snowden had three receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown. William for CHS totaled two receptions for 28 yards and one touchdown.
Lee, Drew Seymour and Dalton Foraker each had a sack for the Cavs, while Isaac McCory and Gabe Minney each recorded a half sack.
Next for the Indians is an away FAC game in Week 4 in Fayette County, as the Tribe will face the Washington Blue Lions at 7 p.m. at Gardner Park.
