The Hillsboro Indians used a two-run sixth inning to defend Shaffer Park in Frontier Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night, defeating the Chillicothe Cavaliers, 3-2 to stay perfect in conference play.

HHS (4-0, 9-3) trailed early on as the visiting Cavaliers scored two runs in the top of the third inning. Hillsboro cut that deficit in half with a run crossing home plate in the fourth inning. The inning started off with a double to centerfield by Dylan Boone. Boone went to third on a groundout, giving the Indians two outs in the inning.

Boone was brought home via two-out double to right field — on a 0-2 count — off the bat of Brennen Priest for a 2-1 score still in favor of the Cavaliers.

The sixth inning where the Indians took possession of the lead for good opened with Grant Crum being safe at first base on an error by the shortstop. Following a pop up out at second base, the Indians gained more momentum with a base hit to centerfield by Boone, which sent Crum to third base.

Boone moved to second on an error, and as the inning continued, Ryan Harless, in as a pinch hitter, hit a fly ball to centerfield. An error in the outfield allowed Harless to be safe at first, while also scoring Crum and moving Boone to third base.

Luke Magulac retuned to the game as a pinch runner for Harless and stole second base, and in the same process Boone scored from third base on an infield error, pushing the Indians ahead at 3-2.

Four batters later, Ryan Scott gained the save by pitching the seventh inning in relief of Magulac.

The Indians totaled three hits in the game, with Boone finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Priest finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and one walk. The Indians totaled four walks for the game, as other walks included Tanner Warner, Crum and Ethan Humphries.

On the mound for Hillsboro, the win went to Magulac, who pitched six innings and threw a total of 94 pitches. Magulac allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits and one walk. Magulac finished the FAC game with seven strikeouts.

Hillsboro’s win moves them to 4-0 in the FAC and 9-3 overall. Next on the schedule for the Indians is another home game on Friday, April 12, as they are scheduled to host the McClain Tigers at 5 p.m. at Shaffer Park.
