Lead Summary

The season is winding down, but for the South Central Ohio League, there are still some quality match-ups to settle who will be the league champion. Right now, there are three teams of the eight in the league who are still undefeated, but after Week 8, there will be only at least two still with a zero in the league loss column.

The matchup of the night is Clinton-Massie at Chillicothe, with first place in the SCOL on the line. These two teams have had great games in past years with the top of the league standings on the line. CM enters the game with a 56-game league winning streak. The Cavs have won their past six straight games this season, so eventually something will have to give.

That should be one heck of a game, with both teams having state champion coaches and excellent athletes.

Also tonight, one team in the league will gain their first league win of the ’16 season with the Hillsboro Indians hosting the East Clinton Astros at Richards Memorial Field on Hillsboro’s homecoming. Both teams enter this week with an 0-4 SCOL mark.

This week has a great football feel to it. The weather is more suited for this time of the year, and even with it being Week 8 and some of the teams in the league out of the playoff picture, there is still a lot of excitement in the air as there are still opportunities to finish out the season on a winning note for the next three games.

Here is a sneak peek at this week’s games.

• Clinton-Massie Falcons (4-0, 6-10) at Chillicothe Cavaliers (4-0, 6-1)
Like mentioned before, this is the “Game of Games” for the SCOL this week and should go very far in determining who will be the final SCOL football champion. The Cavs have won their past six games of the regular season, including scoring no less than 38 points in a game the past four weeks.

Last week, the Cavs defeated the McClain Tigers, 49-9 and are playing very solid football with their running game, especially using both their quarterbacks to make plays as they have done the past two weeks against teams from Highland County.

The Falcons are doing what they always do against teams in the league … winning. CM has scored 199 points combined in four SCOL games this season and have allowed just 14. Chillicothe will be their toughest league game to date, and this game should be a game many talk about for years to come.

• East Clinton Astros (0-4, 0-7) at Hillsboro Indians (0-4, 1-6)

Somebody will gain their first league win of the season this year, and if the Astros win this road game, they will also be earning their first win since Week 2 of last season. The Astros have had trouble scoring points in league play the past four weeks, but in four SCOL games, the Indians have allowed nine more points.

EC has scored 32 points in four SCOL games and allowed 183, while the Indians have scored 76 points in four league games and given up 192. Neither team has won a game in the past month, with EC being winless on the year and HHS last gaining a win in Week 3.

This game could be competitive, and in the past they’ve played close match-ups. HHS will also be hosting homecoming, but in all, it still should be a competitive game between two teams who really want to win in SCOL competition.

• McClain Tigers (0-4, 1-6) at Washington Blue Lions (2-2, 5-2)

The Tigers have scored 33 points in four league games this season and allowed 200 points entering this game. The Blue Lions have struggled on defense lately and sit fifth in the SCOL with a 2-2 league record and 5-2 mark on the year.

Washington has faced tough competition the past two weeks on the road. In those games, they lost to Clinton-Massie and Wilmington by a combined 128-22. For the regular season, Washington has scored 224 points but defensively have allowed 273.

The Tigers are playing their final three games on the road to end the season with a 1-1 road mark so far in ’16. They have lost their past six games and for the season have scored 115 points. They’ve allowed 305.

Both teams have playmakers at quarterback, and it will be interesting to see just how the final score of this game turns out.

• Miami Trace Panthers (2-2, 5-2) at Wilmington Hurricane (4-0, 6-1)

This could be a very solid football game, but the ’Cane enter this Week 8 matchup with a 4-0 mark in the SCOL, and within that record, they’ve scored 223 points in their past four games and allowed 87 points.

Compare that to the Miami Trace Panthers, who are 2-2 in the league with 129 points in league play and have allowed 86 points in their past four games.

Remember, the Panthers began the season 3-0 but are 2-2 in their past four games. The two wins have come in consecutive weeks against McClain and East Clinton, winning by a combined score of 94-6.

WHS has won their past four games, defeating McClain, Hillsboro, East Clinton and Washington by scoring no less than 42 points in any of those games.
