SCOL Football Notebook: Week 3
By

The South Central Ohio League football slate has been a rough road to travel this season with teams combining for just five wins in 14 games, along with the stunner of sorts last week when the Clinton-Massie Falcons' 33-game regular-season winning streak was snapped by Waynesville.
What was most surprising wasn't that the Falcons lost, it was that they lost by a score of 17-2. Waynesville scored points on a interception for touchdown, a rushing touchdown and a field goal. More on this later.
The big winners last Friday were the McClain Tigers and the Washington Blue Lions, as they were the lone two league teams to end Friday with a victory.
Entering the third week the SCOL is 5-9 overall with five teams at 1-1 and two teams at 0-2 overall. London and Hillsboro, both of whom are 0-2 overall, have scored the first and third most points, respectively, by teams in the SCOL.
Now let's take a look at each game.
• Clinton-Massie (1-1) vs. Jonathan Alder (2-0)
This will be the game of the week by far involving a team from the SCOL. In one corner, you have a CM team that was held to two points in a 17-2 loss last week, not to mention it was their first loss since the '07 season. In the other corner, you have a JA team that is 2-0 overall with wins against Thomas Worthington (37-0) and Marysville (21-0).
So by those two scores, you have a Pioneer team that has two consecutive shutouts to start the year.
Last year these two teams battled to a 28-27 CM victory, I expect this game will be a classic once again.
• Hillsboro (0-2) at Wilmington (2-0)
We all know my feelings that this should be a league game in the future, but nobody will listen to me, so I guess we're stuck with it being a non-league game. In their history, Wilmington has 14 SCOL football titles and Hillsboro has two.
Last season, the Hurricane won 28-14 at Hillsboro.
This year, the Indians have 44 points and allowed 77 in games against Western Brown and Goshen. WHS has wins against Portsmouth (27-24) and at Miami Trace (16-10).
In the stat book, Wilmington QB Cody McCune is 16-of-29 for 104 yards in the air with one TD pass. The rushing for WHS after two games is Damian Tomlinson with 52 carries for 212 yards (4.1 ypc) and two scores.
This will be Hillsboro's first away game of the season as they have started the year with two home losses. For a complete preview of this game, click here.
• McClain (1-1) vs. East Clinton (0-2)
This will be one of the most interesting games of the season. It is the last time EC will play MHS before they become members of the SCOL next season, and both teams have played a common opponent in Adena, and both were held to minimal rushing yards.
I'm interested to see exactly what kind of team the Astros bring to the field because they are a better team than what their overall record states. EC has not only faces a tough defense in Adena this season, but opened the year against a tough Waynesville team, the same team that ended Clinton-Massie's 33-game regular-season winning streak last week.
Again, of all the games, it should be the most interesting one just to see where each team stands after three weeks.

• Madison-Plains (1-1) vs. Southeastern-SC (2-0)
The Trojans of Southeastern South Charleston have won their first two games by a combined score of 60-21 with a 26-0 win over Northwestern and 34-21 win last week against Fairbanks.
MP won their season opener against Cedarville 27-0 and lost to West Jefferson last week 52-7.
The Golden Eagles of MP are still a team that has little experience but have already matched their season total of wins from last season under new head coach Mike Siders. MP is improved, but this will be a tough matchup in Week 3 for MP.
SE, who is a member of the Ohio Heritage Conference, is led by QB Luke Pavlatos with 320 yards passing in two weeks and two TD passes.
• Miami Trace (1-1) at Tecumseh (1-1)
In what I heard is their last meeting as the SCOL is scheduled to expand by one team next season, the Miami Trace Panthers will travel to face the Tecumseh Arrows in New Carlisle this Friday.
MT is coming off a six-point loss to the Wilmington Hurricane last week (16-10) and have a Week 1 win against Circleville by a score of 23-14.
Tecumseh has won this game the past six year, with MT's last win against them coming in 2004 as the Arrows have won seven of the last eight times against MT.
• London (0-2) vs. West Jefferson (2-0)
The Roughriders of West Jefferson have allowed seven points in their first two game with wins over Mechanicsburg (31-0) and MP (52-7).
The Red Raiders of London have lost two games by a combined nine points, with losses to Urbana (35-34 in triple overtime) and last week a loss at Hamilton Township, 35-27.
Last week, LHS scored at least six points in all four quarters, with QB Dylan Follrod going 11-of-21 for 171 yards and a TD passing. On the ground, he had 15 carries for 95 yards. Antonio Wilson had 18 rushes for 81 yards. Receiving, Wilson had two catches for 33 yards and one TD. Josh High led LHS with seven tackles.
• Washington (1-1) vs. Adena (2-0)
Adena has a lot going for them this season with a defense that has allowed less than 50 yards of rushing in each game they played. Their offensive rushing attack has caused teams problems, and they are just an overall good team that will run the football.
The Blue Lions are coming of a win over Circleville 32-19 and had a week one loss to Logan Elm 41-13.
Adena's defense has allowed just 12 points in two weeks with a Week 1 shutout of McClain 31-0 and a 35-12 win last week against East Clinton.
Should be a very interesting game to see if the Warriors can stop the rushing attack of the Blue Lions.
• My Week 3 Predictions
- Clinton-Massie over Jonathan Alder
- Wilmington over Hillsboro
- West Jefferson over Madison-Plains
- McClain over East Clinton
- Adena over Washington
- West Jefferson over London
- Tecumseh over Miami Trace
After two weeks, my prediction record is 5-9.
• Stats that Stood Out
- CM's only two points were a safety.
- After two weeks, Antonio Wilson (LHS) has 324 yards in two games.
- Dylan Follrod passed for 171 yards in Week 2. For the year, he has 358 yards passing.
- Clayton Dyer has 227 yards in two weeks for MT.
- Jerome Pettiford has 286 yards rushing in the first two Washington games.
- Reily Shaw (WCH) had 186 yards rushing in two games.
- Bayle Wolf has 182 yards rushing for the Falcons in two games.
• 5 Things I'd like to see happen this Friday
1. I'd like to see the SCOL finish with a winning week overall. Last week the league went 2-5 in seven games.
2. I'd like to see the McClain Tigers' offensive and defensive lines continue their improvement from last week.
3. I'd like to see the last two SCOL teams that are winless gain their first win of the season.
4. I'd like to see the chill stay in the air, but the rain go away.
5. I'd like to see every player leave healthy once the game is complete.[[In-content Ad]]
