Though this notebook is one day later than usual, the third week of the high school football season has arrived, and it is also the final week of non-league play for the South Central Ohio League as the league schedule begins for the final time next week.
As for this upcoming week, the SCOL has some interesting non-league match-ups, including the following games and a quick peek at each game:
• Friday, Sept. 9
Zane Trace (0-2) at McClain (1-1)
Washington (2-0) at London (1-1)
Miami Trace (2-0) at Logan Elm (2-0)
Clinton-Massie (1-1) at Shawnee (1-1)
Chillicothe (1-1) at Teays Valley (2-0)
Wilmington (2-0) at Butler (1-1)
Greeneview at East Clinton (0-2)
• Saturday, Sept. 10
Clermont Northeastern (0-2) at Hillsboro (0-2)

- Zane Trace Pioneers at McClain Tigers: This game is always fun to watch in the battle of Ross County vs. Highland County. It is also a battle of the Scioto Valley Conference (SVC) and the SCOL, which is always exciting too since around these parts, both conferences/leagues have area teams playing in them. Zane Trace has won at least a part of the SVC title the past two seasons, and though they currently are winless after two weeks, they can’t be overlooked since they still have players learning on the go at the varsity level. The Tigers have scored 75 points combined this season, while allowing 63, but for this MHS team, it is great to see them reach the end zone as much as they have this season, while being two points away from being 2-0 on the year. Last season, the Pioneers defeated MHS, 58-7.
- Washington Blue Lions at London Red Raiders: There is a bit of nostalgia with this match-up of former SCOL league mates, though there isn’t much in common with those teams from back then to what they currently are right now. It has been a few seasons since the Red Raiders were in the SCOL, and as for them this season, they enter this game at 1-1, coming off a 20-14 win over Greenon in Week 2. Their loss was against Urbana by a 28-26 score. The Blue Lions enter this game by scoring no less than 42 points in a game this season. WSHS has gained wins against Northridge (42-26) and Circleville (48-42). The last time these two teams played was in 2012 when the Blue Lions won, 52-6.
- Miami Trace Panthers at Logan Elm Braves: This is my “Game of the Week” for the SCOL with both teams entering undefeated and both seemingly playing solid football after the first two weeks of the season. This season, the Panthers’ wins have come against Circleville (51-12) and Carlisle (30-27), averaging 40.5 points per game. The Braves have defeated Zane Trace (26-24) and Westfall (35-7), with their ppg average being 30.5, though their defense is allowing just 15.5 ppg. The defense of MT is allowing 19.5 ppg.
- Clinton-Massie Falcons at Shawnee Braves: The Falcons are coming off a close loss to Turpin (a Div. II team) by a 28-21 score, while Shawnee is doing the same, as they lost to Tippecanoe, 35-7 last week. This will be an interesting game with both being Division IV, with Shawnee playing in Region 14 and the Falcons playing in Region 16. The Falcons might have not gained the win last season, but the best is yet to come from this team. The win by Shawnee this season came in the season opener against Thurgood Marshall by a 31-6 final. Shawnee is averaging 33 points per game, while CM averages 27 ppg this season through two games.
- Chillicothe Cavaliers at Teays Valley Vikings: The Cavaliers had a good win last week against Jackson, winning by three points at 24-21 and having their defense hold up in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Teams Valley is undefeated through two games, defeating Westfall (31-24) and Logan (21-0). Last season, the Cavs won this meeting, 34-28. The Cavs are still a young football team, and only two games into the ’16 season, it seems like they’ve shown improvement from Week 1 to Week 2. It will be exciting to see how things turn out this week for the Cavaliers.
- Wilmington Hurricane at Butler Aviators: Butler enters this game with a 1-1 record, coming off a 24-7 victory over Tecumseh, with their one loss this year coming vs. Perry (24-14). Wilmington has put up some nice numbers this season, defeating Little Miami in the season opener, 42-12 and Greenville, 26-7. According to stats on MaxPreps.com, the Hurricane are averaging 143.5 receiving yards per game and 244 yards rushing per game. Dylan Beaugard leads WHS with 192 yards rushing through two games, an average of 10.7 yards per carry. He’s rushed for three touchdowns and has four touchdowns overall.
- Greeneview Rams at East Clinton Astros: This season, Jamestown Greeneview has a Week 2 win over Madison-Plains, 30-6, and a loss to Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy by a 41-22 score. MaxPreps.com has Greeneview averaging 253.5 yards per game rushing. EC has lost to Batavia and Blanchester this season, allowing an average of 36.5 ppg. EC has scored 54 points this season. The Astros are averaging 141.5 receiving yards per game this season and 174 yards rushing per game.
- Clermont Northeastern Rockets at Hillsboro Indians: The Indians have won this game for the past two seasons, and entering this game, both teams are looking for their first win of the season. In their losses, the Indians have allowed a total of 97 points through two games, losing to Western Brown and Goshen. CNE has allowed 63 points this season, with losses to Fayetteville (22-10) and Amelia (41-6). Last season, the Indians won this contest, 40-6, and in ’14 HHS won by a 39-0 score.
• Stat of the Week: The Wilmington Hurricane through two games this season have allowed a total of just 19 points, an average of 9.5 ppg with a 2-0 record. On the other hand, the Washington Blue Lions are also 2-0, but are allowing 34 ppg, but each are getting the final results they want, wins.
• Final Comment: This week is always a little bittersweet as it is the end of the non-league schedule, and next week begins the all-out battle for seven straight weeks in the SCOL. Though that’s always fun, getting to see some different teams and schools not associated within the league is always fun too. Enjoy this week, and let’s hope the rain holds off during the games, too!
