Lead Summary

The first week of the high school football season for teams in the South Central Ohio League involved delays, surprises, comeback wins and teams looking like they are their old selves once again.
It was a week of high school football that won’t be forgotten soon in Greenfield, with the Tigers rallying back with 28 unanswered points in the second half to gain a season-opening win over Adena. The Highland County Press’ Jim Jones covered the game that night in Frankfort and described the comeback in great detail, showing once again why The Highland County Press provides the best coverage in Highland County.
The 34-12 win by the Tigers was their third straight victory dating back to last season, showing us that head coach Jeremey Andrews is getting the program back in the right direction, as it does take a good amount of time to rebuild a football program no matter the level.
Also that night, the Miami Trace Panthers continued the momentum they had from the end of last season as well with a convincing 51-12 victory over the Circleville Tigers in their annual rivalry matchup based from the “old SCOL” days.
Just how dominant were the Panthers on Friday night? They built a 35-5 lead at halftime.
Also, a congratulations goes out to new Washington Blue Lions head coach Chuck Williamson for gaining his first head coaching win with the Blue Lions in his first game as their head coach. The Blue Lions defeated Northridge, 42-26 on the road.
As for the two-day games due to lightning, it was surprising that the Clinton-Massie Falcons score was just four points over Blanchester, and the Hillsboro Indians lost their season opener at Western Brown. Wilmington seemed to dominate their game by the final score, while East Clinton lost by less than a touchdown and the Chillicothe Cavaliers fell to Johnstown-Monroe.
• Here are the final scores from Week 1 in the SCOL:
- McClain 34, Adena 21
- Washington 42, Northridge 26
- Circleville 12, Miami Trace 51
- Clinton-Massie 33, Blanchester 29
- Little Miami 12, Wilmington 42
- Hillsboro 22, Western Brown 48
- Johnstown-Monroe 29, Chillicothe 12
- East Clinton 21, Batavia 26

• Week 2 Game Sneak Peek:
- Hillsboro at Goshen: One of these two teams will gain their first win of the season on Friday night in non-league play. The Indians were shut out in the first half at Western Brown on Friday night, but when the second half of their game was played on Saturday morning after the postponement, they scored 22 points in the final two quarters with some big-yardage plays. Goshen was held to three points in their 6-3 loss to Ross. Last season, Goshen defeated the Indians, 27-7 in Hillsboro.
- McClain at Unioto: The Tigers are coming off an impressive second half last Friday night by defeating the Adena Warriors with four second-half touchdowns and five for the game in their 34-21 win. MHS had just six points at the half, but they rallied behind the play of Tristan Pitzer, and he, along with his teammates, raced past Adena. This week, the Tigers look to avenge another loss from last season against Unioto. In the game from ’15, the Shermans defeated McClain, 54-26 at UHS. The Shermans are entering Week 2 coming off a 34-7 win over Vinton County.
- Washington vs. Circleville: The first trip to Fayette County this season wasn’t too kind to the Circleville Tigers, and the Blue Lions are hoping that feeling stays the same this week as well as they are set to face the Tigers. Circleville returns to Fayette County after one week earlier losing to the Miami Trace Panthers, 52-12. Washington defeated Northridge to start the season by a 42-26 score. Last season, Washington lost to Circleville, 39-7.
- Miami Trace at Carlisle: The Indians of Carlisle are looking for their first win, and the Miami Trace Panthers are wanting to win their second game of the season, a feat not accomplished last year until Week 7. This isn’t the same Panthers team from one year ago, proven last Friday with a 39-point victory over Circleville to start this year. MT scored 35 of their 51 points against Circleville in the first half. The Indians lost in Week 1 to the Franklin Wildcats, 30-27.
- Clinton-Massie at Turpin: The Spartans of Turpin didn’t mess around in Week 1, gaining their season-opening win over Archbishop McNicholas by 21 points, winning by a 27-6 score. The Falcons of Clinton-Massie are also coming off a victory this past weekend, defeating Blanchester, 33-29. This is a new regular-season game for these two teams, as they didn’t play each other last year. This should be a good test for both teams, as both programs earned playoff wins last season.
- Chillicothe vs. Jackson: Next year, this will be a league/conference showdown with the two schools joining four others in a new league that has no official name announced, but this year they are non-league opponents. The Cavaliers had a tough second half last week, resulting in their 29-12 loss to Johnstown-Monroe. The Ironmen of Jackson easily defeated Wellston, 51-8. This is Jackson’s second straight road game. These two teams faced each other last season with Jackson winning, 19-16 in overtime. With a game under their belt with some new offensive players, it will be interesting to hear how the Cavs return to the gridiron in Week 2.
- Wilmington at Greenville: Both the Hurricane and the Green Wave ride into this game coming off season-opening wins. Wilmington defeated Little Miami, 42-12, and Greenville defeated Eaton, 20-14. The Hurricane didn’t allow a score by Little Miami until the fourth quarter, and offensively WHS scored points on their first drive. It will be interesting to see how the very athletic Wilmington team plays in Week 2, as this could become a very good season for the Hurricane.
- East Clinton vs. Blanchester: Both of these two schools had single-digit losses to begin the year, with Blanchester really surprising by only losing by four points to the reigning SCOL champion Clinton-Massie Falcons. The Astros gave up big rushing scores that resulted in their loss, a 26-21 loss to Batavia, but on the positive side, EC did score no less than two points in each quarter. This Clinton County matchup is also the last between these two teams as members of different conferences, as both will be members of the SBAAC next season. The Astros defeated Blanchester in ’15 by a 21-20 score.
• Quote of the Week: “We were not playing very well early, but then in the third quarter, our kids responded and started making some plays. Once we realized that we could play with these guys, we started executing better, and good things started happening.” — Jeremey Andrews, McClain football head coach.
• Stat of the Week: Wilmington won against their Week 1 opponent Little Miami by a 42-12 score. In their past six meetings, the Hurricane have outscored Little Miami, 274-85, scoring an average of 45.7 points per game in those meetings, while allowing an average of just 14.2 ppg.
• Final Thoughts: The first week of the high school football season lasted a day longer than most wanted it to, but it was good to get the first week’s worth of games finished, and it is even more exciting to see how the teams from the SCOL respond following their Week 1 outings. With just two games left until the league schedule begins, it will be interesting to see how all eight of the SCOL teams improve this week and next before facing each other.
