Hillsboro City Schools superintendent Tim Davis honored the girls and boys varsity bowling team and their coaches at the start of the HCS Board of Education meeting Monday, March 15.

Davis named the members of the team and their coaches, introduced those in attendance and spoke of both teams’ many accolades from the past season.

“The tradition and foundation that you guys have started and are continuing to excel in is an absolutely awesome thing, not only for our school, but also for the Hillsboro community,” Davis told the teams.

As previously reported, the Lady Indians placed third overall as a team at the 2021 OHSAA Division I State Bowling Championships. Senior Selena Mingua also placed third as an individual for first-team All-Ohio honors, while junior Maddie Tomko was honorable mention All-Ohio with a 12th-place finish.

This season, the Hillsboro Lady Indians were undefeated Frontier Athletic Conference champions, and they also were crowned district champions. The two Hillsboro seniors, Mingua and Jazlen Jones, were undefeated in FAC play in their four years with the Hillsboro program. Four bowlers — Mingua, Tomko, Jones and Taylor Jordan — also received All-FAC honors.

“Third place in the Division I state [tournament] is absolutely unbelievable,” Davis said. “Four years of not losing a league match is unbelievable.”

Team members Brianna Callahan, Lila Carter, Jordan and Maddie Tomko were introduced at Monday night’s meeting, as the team also included Jones, Mingua and Belle Perkins. Also recognized were coaches Lucia Tomko and Shane Ison.

“We’re losing two seniors, but we have a lot of underclassmen, and the future looks bright,” Davis said. “Continue to work hard, and congratulations. Hopefully we can go back to the state again next year.”

As also reported by The Highland County Press, the Indians were seventh overall at the OHSAA Division II State Bowling Championships. They were also the Frontier Athletic Conference champions, the FAC Tournament champions, the Southeast District Sectional champions and the SE District champions. Three HHS bowlers, Zach Ison, Jawaun Jones and Hunter Springer, were All-FAC.

Introduced at Monday night’s meeting were team members Zacha Burns, Zach Ison and Jawaun Jones and coaches Dan Snapp and Shane Ison. The team also included Blaine Bledsoe, Shaun Rodgers, Springer and Ovid Wilson, who were recognized as well.

“Again, the amount of state appearances is just absolutely unbelievable,” Davis said. “Thank you, coaches, and thank you, boys. Again, we have a lot of youth here, but we lose a couple seniors. Thank you for your time and basically leading the way, showing the younger guys what it takes to put in the work.

“Congratulations on a great season.”

Prior to the meeting, board president Bill Myers congratulated the bowlers individually, and the Board of Education and others in attendance Monday gave the team and coaches several rounds of applause.
