For the Hillsboro Indians football program, things were a little tough last season, finishing 1-9 overall, but this year the Indians are looking to take the next step in the rebuilding of their football program.

This season, Hillsboro will have a tough regular-season schedule, but every team in the South Central Ohio League can say that.

As I watched around 45 minutes of their practice on Thursday evening, the Indians got to have some full-contact practice, and I got to see them work on their offense and of course the end-of-practice running.

As for the football part … it was good to see the Indians get after it with some enthusiasm and excitement in their practice. They will have some familiar faces back at the skill positions, and I'm honestly intrigued to see just how much they've improved from the end of the '13 season until they scrimmage next week.

Another part of the Indians I like is this will be the second season with Matt Hodge as the head coach, and having some consistency at that head coaching spot is key for the Indians to build a successful program for the future.

I know the Indians have just three wins the past three seasons, but it takes some tough times to be able to enjoy and work for the good times.

WIth the Indians having two scrimmages this upcoming week against Unioto and Adena, that will be a good test to see just where the Indians stand as they get closer to the regular season on Friday, Aug. 29 at Western Brown.

I'll write more on the Indians next week following one of their two scrimmages.
