The further the Frontier Athletic Conference match between the Hillsboro Indians and Miami Trace Lady Panthers went, the more intense and physical it became. Tempers were rising, and the two teams wanted in the worst way to gain the conference win.

With just over 8:00 left in the match, the game had a foul called, and a penalty kick was awarded to the Lady Panthers as a full moon set above the Hillsboro High School soccer field. A kick past the keeper by Miami Trace’s Emily Powell was the only goal needed in the match, as the score finished at 1-0 in favor of the visitors, Thursday in FAC action.

The match was tied at 0-0 after the first 40 minutes of action, but as the sun set and the sky turned to darkness, and the lights of the Hillsboro soccer field heated up, so did the play in the second half. In fact, the Lady Indians had most of the offensive pressure in the final 40 minutes but were unable to get goals to score as shot attempts sailed wide left, wide right, above the goal and even right to the keeper.

Though HHS didn’t get the ball past the visiting keeper in the match, besides the penalty kick made by Powell with 8:19 left in the match no other goal was scored either.

“The way that the previous six games have gone for us (besides Washington and Jackson) it has been rough, and tonight the girls showed me tonight what they are fully capable of if we are running on all cylinders and wanting to be out there,” HHS coach Anthony Carson said. “Even though it was a loss, but take away the PK and it was a 0-0 game.

“It was a fantastic match to watch them play. The girls are starting to get on track. In warmups tonight was the most I’ve seen us hit frame. We are getting there, but when the pressure is on we hit it straight to the goalie, and that is painful to watch.”

Both keepers made big-time saves in the second half, as MT keeper Aubrey Schwartz — who totaled 20 saves in the win — made two timely saves at the 22:10 mark and the 21:18 mark of the second half. Hillsboro continued to have big offensive pressure vs. Miami Trace midway through the second half but were unable to convert any of that pressure into goal-scoring celebrations.

At the 18:21 mark, a shot by the Indians was just inches wide, and at the 13:55 mark the Lady Indians had a big defensive stop to keep the scoreboard at zero. As the game continued to be more physically played and no fouls were being called, a yellow card went into the direction of Miami Trace with the scoreboard reading 12:31.

HHS had another kick that sailed wide of the goal with 7:47 left in the match, and with under a minute left, the Lady Indians were unable to score on a shot at the goal. The match eventually ended with MTHS kicking the ball out of play as time expired to keep HHS from gaining one final shot at the goal.

For the match, HHS totaled 33 shots at goal and MTHS had seven. HHS keeper Christine Page finished with five saves.

“Defensively, our back line doesn’t change a lot, and they stay very solid and work their tails off as a team,” Carson said.

On Wednesday, the Hillsboro Lady Indians had what Coach Carson described as a “fun practice night,” with his team traveling to Dayton to T.O.P. Soccer as the Lady Indians shared their love for the game of soccer with their athletes. T.O.P. soccer is described on their website as:

“US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based training program for all athletes with intellectual, emotional and/or physical disabilities. The program strives to provide soccer opportunities (the opportunity of soccer) for players to develop at their own pace in a safe, fun and supportive/inclusive environment.”

Coach Carson spoke about the experience for his team.

“We gave our girls that experience as a practice and allowed them to share their love of the game with their kids, and it was a great experience to be a part of,” Carson said.

Next for HHS is an away match on Tuesday, Sept. 17 against the McClain Lady Tigers at McClain Field as their game will follow the boys game.
