There is a change to the traditional Hillsboro Indians football “fish fry” football scrimmage in 2017, as there will be no scrimmage held at Richards Memorial Field for the traditional final "fish fry" scrimmage before the regular season.

Due to changes in opponent for the final scrimmage, a change was made to the traditional final scrimmage format, as most schools traditionally alternate yearly final scrimmages the week before the regular season.

The “fish fry” scrimmage is an annual tradition for the Hillsboro Indians since the 1960s.

A past favorite of the fish fry scrimmage was the secret spice recipe for the fried fish sandwiches from Arlene Cole, along with late husband Jon “Joe” Cole. The Coles retired from the fish fry in 2011, and since then, others took over the tradition.

That said, there will be one home football scrimmage for the Indians on Friday, Aug. 11 at Richards Memorial Field when they host the Blanchester Wildcats in a regular scrimmage with the 10-play format and in-game situations.

For that game versus Blanchester, there will be a "meet the team night" for the fall sports teams, but fish will not be served at the event, though there will be simple concessions.

For those wanting to have the traditional fish sandwiches, for the first home game of the 2017 football season when the Indians host Western Brown on Friday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m., there will be fish sandwiches available for purchase at the concession stands. In a Facebook post on the Hillsboro Athletic Boosters page, it says fish will also be available at a table outside the gate for the Week 1 game for those not attending the season opener against Western Brown.

The Hillsboro Indians football scrimmage schedule consists of the following games:

• Tuesday, Aug. 8 at Unioto, 5 p.m.

• Friday, Aug. 11 vs. Blanchester, 6 p.m.

• Saturday, Aug 19 at Batavia, 7 p.m.
