On Monday night, as the blue sky turned to a chilly and at times foggy evening, the Hillsboro Indians hosted the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs in a non-conference rivalry match, which saw the visiting Mustangs leave with a 4-2 victory.
Though the match was physical and drew a good number of yellow cards, the Mustangs were able to hold off the Indians late in the second half by snapping a 2-2 tied score and turning it into a two-goal lead.
“This is our first game back with Kyle [Luneke] and Austin [Hilt], and we just weren’t playing well,” LC head coach Dennis West said. “Everybody was trying to do too much, and we were trying to talk to them about just play your normal game, rely on your teammates. We told them don’t try to overplay everything, don’t try to do it all yourself.
“We got better in the second half, especially toward the end, but we’ve got to get back to the way we were playing right before fair break. We had a tough go of it in Greenfield and Western Brown, but that’s the past. Now we’ve got to focus on our future and getting ourselves back to where we were before fair break. We were playing outrageously good soccer. We’ll get there. We have three days before we see Fairfield, so we’ll get things squared away by then.”

LC (5-2-1) led by a 2-0 score in the first half with just over 11 minutes on the clock, first with a goal from Austin Hilt, with the unassisted goal coming at the 29:39 mark of the first half. LC’s second goal was scored by Kyle Luneke with 11:32 left in the opening half.
That lead stood until there were just 13 seconds left in the first half as Quinn Conlon scored the first of his two goals on a penalty kick (to the right corner of the net), cutting the LC lead in half … at the half for a 2-1 score.
In the second half, the Indians had another opportunity at a penalty kick, and again it was Conlon who took complete advantage of the situation. Conlon placed the ball in the back of the goal with 27:50 on the scoreboard for the 2-2 tied score.
The defense of the Indians did all they could to keep the score all locked up, including keeper Joe Rudy (who totaled eight saves) diving onto the ball for the save at the 22-minute mark. Later, the defense kept the score the same as well with a big stop on LC pressure with just under 21 minutes left in the match.
HHS had some more offensive pressure, but this time the defense of LC kept the ball away from the goal around the 16-minute mark. LC eventually took a one-goal lead on a penalty kick conversion from Chris Young with 10:14 left in regulation, sending the ball to the right corner of the net.
The final goal for the Mustangs came from Luneke, his second of the match, with 9:41 remaining.
At goal for LC, Blake Croy totaled five saves, with four in the first half.
“I want to say the facilities at Hillsboro are excellent, and they have a great soccer field,” West said. “It is a great place to play, and they’ve done a great job there.”
The Mustangs will play in a Southern Hills Athletic Conference match on Friday vs. Fairfield. In their next game, HHS will travel to take on the Washington Blue Lions in a South Central Ohio League match.
