The McClain Lady Tigers celebrated their five seniors on Monday night and in the process won their 15th game of the 2020-21 season by defeating visiting Highland County rival Hillsboro by a 50-27 score at McClain Gym.

The win saw the Lady Tigers sweep the season series with their Frontier Athletic Conference counterpart, moving their overall record to 15-4 and their FAC record to 8-2. Hillsboro fell to 5-11 overall and 3-5 in the FAC.

In the opening frame, the Lady Tigers and Lady Indians were tied 8-8 with four minutes remaining in the quarter. The first eight points scored by McClain were two 3-pointers by Josie Crabtree and two points from Emma Stegbauer. Hillsboro’s points in that span were six points by Brynn Bledsoe and two points from Edenfield. Stegbauer totaled six points in the win. Bledsoe ended the game with 11 points to lead HHS in scoring.

McClain took the lead with 2:55 left in the first frame off a jumper by Bri Weller, but HHS came back with a 3-pointer by Bledsoe for an 11-10 Hillsboro lead with 2:16 on the clock. Weller led the Lady Tigers with 20 points, as she finished the game with four 3-pointers and four two-point baskets.

The Lady Tigers answered with a 3-pointer by Weller at the 1:45 mark, and HHS tied the game at 13 when Bledsoe scored two points in the paint off a layup with the clock reading 1:06.

It was McClain again breaking the tied score with a third 3-pointer by Josie Crabtree with 52 seconds on the first-quarter clock, and Iva Easter followed by making one free throw. Crabtree totaled 10 points for the game.

The final points of the first quarter were two points off a basket by Mya Bell of Hillsboro, cutting McClain’s lead down to two points at 17-15.

The second quarter was a whole different story for McClain and Hillsboro as the Lady Tigers outscored the visiting Lady Indians, 15-3 for a halftime lead of 32-18.

McClain opened the second quarter by scoring the first seven points of the frame with Jaelyn Pitzer sinking a free throw — to go with her stifling defensive play during the entire game — followed by two 3-pointers by Weller for a 24-15 lead with 6:05 on the second-quarter clock.

The scoring run of McClain was broken up with two points by Jaden Moberly, only to see Stegbauer score three points off a trifecta at the 4:40 mark for a 27-17 McClain advantage.

MHS added to their lead with a free throw made by Josie Crabtree, but HHS answered with the same free-throw conversion by Edenfield with 2:17 left in the first half, as MHS still led by 10 points at 28-18.

McClain ended the second quarter with two points from Kyla Burchett and two free throws by Madi Sykes for a 32-18 lead after two quarters. Burchett finished the game with six points.

In the second half, McClain added 10 points to their total in the third frame, while HHS scored four points for a 42-22 Lady Tigers lead after three frames. MHS had a 3-pointer from Burchett, a put-back basket by Payton Pryor, plus a 3-pointer and two-point basket from Weller in the third.
