It took a few minutes for the McClain Lady Tigers to warm up and get their scoring going, but after trailing by eight points to start the game, the visiting McClain team was able to not just take the lead, but hold on to the lead with late free throws in the final quarter for a 47-43 win in Frontier Athletic Conference play.

The win by the Lady Tigers also gives them the season sweep over their conference rival, as they won against the Lady Indians at MHS earlier in the season by a 62-59 score in overtime.

On Saturday night, it was Hillsboro (2-8, 8-14) who scored points first with an 8-0 run, with the first six points by Karleigh Hopkins, including a 3-pointer at the 2:52 mark for a 6-0 lead. Kelsey Burns followed with two points off a steal and layup for the eight-point lead. Hopkins finished the game with 12 points.

McClain (3-7, 5-16) scored their first points of the game with two points by Maddy Stegbauer, only to see the Lady Indians answer with two points by Kaley Burns for a 10-2 HHS advantage with 1:38 left on the first-quarter clock.

Stegbauer finished the game with 17 points.

“I thought Maddy Stegbauer really took the game in control there where we didn’t score,” MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. “I think she was the first one to kind of get us going. She made huge free throws for us tonight, but that was a kid that was in the gym at 10:30 this morning shooting free throws and working on her shot.

“Those young kids out there, hard work pays off. Not everybody’s willing to put time in when no one’s watching, and she does. We struggled executing, but at the end of the day, we won, and that’s all that really matters.”

The Lady Tigers came back with a free throw from Kelli Uhrig, but Hopkins was there to answer for the Lady Indians with two points.

MHS ended the scoring in the first frame with five straight points to end the quarter off three points from Stegbauer and a free throw from Uhrig to make it a 12-8 score with Hillsboro leading. Uhrig totaled seven points in the win.

McClain won the second frame at 9-5, resulting in the score being tied at 17-17 when halftime arrived. For the Lady Tigers, they had points in the frame from Stegbauer, Kyla Burchett and Jaelyn Pitzer. Pitzer finished the game with nine points, and Burchett totaled six points.

Hillsboro’s five points in the second came from Natalie Sullivan and Madi Marsh, as Marsh totaled 11 points for the game.

“Ultimately, it probably comes back to that second quarter,” HHS head coach JR Moberly said. “We just missed shot opportunity after shot opportunity.”

The score was tied on three occasions in the second at 13, 15 and 17. Burchett tied the score at 13 with 3:05 on the scoreboard, while Sullivan made it a 15-15 score with two points with the clock reading 58 seconds. Marsh made it a 17-17 score with two points at the buzzer.

McClain was strong in the third frame, winning the quarter at 15-8 and taking a 32-25 lead at the conclusion of the third frame.

Stegbauer and Burchett pushed the MHS lead to 20-17 within one minute into the third, but a layup by Lana Grover — with the assist by Riley Moberly — brought HHS to within one point of the Lady Tigers with 6:30 in the third. MHS answered with a 3-pointer from Uhrig, only to see HHS score two points off a basket by Marsh and a 3-pointer from Hopkins for a 24-23 lead for Hillsboro.

McClain regrouped and finished the third frame with a 6-1 run off a jumper by Stegbauer, a layup by Burchett and a jumper from the corner at the buzzer by Pitzer for a seven-point lead. Also in the third, Hannah Smith made a free throw for MHS.

In the fourth, Hillsboro outscored MHS 18-15, with HHS having points from Kayden Watson, Josie Hopkins, Grover, Hopkins, Marsh and Riley Moberly. Marsh, Moberly, Kaley Burns and Sullivan were also honored as the team's four seniors.

“I’m proud of our seniors, and they will be missed,” Moberly said.

McClain saw Stegbauer go 6-of-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth, while Emma Stegbauer and Pitzer each sank a 3-pointer. Also in the fourth, Uhrig was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line, and Bryn Karnes also made a free-throw attempt.

In the entire fourth frame, MHS was 9-of-15 in their free-throw shooting, and for the game they were 14-of-23.

“Those three freshmen (Pitzer, Emma Stegbauer, Burchett) made big shots for us down the stretch. You can get by with one freshman with inexperience sometimes, but having three, that’s tough, but they’ve done a great job,” Haines said. “They’ve grown a lot. I’m not so sure that we would have won this game earlier in the year, but with what we’ve been through and how we’ve battled, we’re kind of been battle-tested. We came through with huge free throws by Kelli Uhrig and Maddy Stegbauer tonight. That was great leadership.”

The JV game was two quarters, where McClain won by a 25-21 score. Josie Crabtree led MHS with seven points, and HHS was led by Kayden Watson with six points.
