HILLSBORO — Playing in their third game in seven days, the No. 8 Division III state-ranked Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs took control midway through the first quarter in their non-conference game against the Hillsboro Lady Indians and never looked back, winning by a 64-23 score Saturday afternoon.

The game saw Lynchburg-Clay senior and Miami University signee Peyton Scott finish with a double-double as she totaled 27 points in 23 minutes of play, along with 17 rebounds (13 defensive). Scott added three steals and two assists in the win and was 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Also for LCHS, junior Zoe Fittro scored 15 points and had three steals and three rebounds in the win, as the Lady Mustangs improved to 15-1 overall on the season.

“With it being a Saturday morning game and with all the weather changes, I was worried we’d come out flat,” Lynchburg-Clay head coach Whitney Lewis said. “From the start, we did a good job of keeping the intensity up, especially from the defensive end, and to hold a team to eight points in a half, that is good to see.”

In the Saturday afternoon game at Hillsboro’s gym, the Lady Mustangs were first on the scoreboard with two points from the free-throw line by Scott, and those points were part of a first frame that saw the visiting Lynchburg-Clay squad outscore Hillsboro, 18-3. HHS tied the score at 2-2 with a basket from Lana Grover off an inbounds pass, only to see the Lady Mustangs score the next five points off a three-point play from Scott, and a steal and layup from Serena Smith, for a 7-2 lead with 4:39 left in the opening quarter.

Hillsboro scored their final point of the first with a free throw by Kayden Watson, but from there the rest of the first was all Lady Mustangs as they went on an 11-0 run to end the frame. That scoring run began with a rebound and layup by Scott, followed by a jumper while being fouled, also by Scott, who was playing with two fouls in the first quarter. The senior made the ensuing free throw to complete the three-point play with 2:47 on the clock.

Next was a free throw conversion by Smith, and Fittro swished a 3-pointer with 54 seconds on the scoreboard for a 16-3 LC lead. The quarter ended with a fall-away jumper at the buzzer by Scott for the 15-point advantage after one quarter.

LC continued their dominance not only offensively by scoring 19 points in the second, but their defense held Hillsboro to five points in the second for a halftime score of 37-8.

Hillsboro scored first in the second with a 3-pointer from Grover 33 seconds into the quarter. Grover led HHS with seven points in the loss.

From there, LC scored the next 13 points to increase their lead to 33-6. The scoring run started off with a 3-pointer from Scott, followed with two free throws by Logan Binkley. Next were two points by Chelsea Hart at the 5:24 mark of the second for a 25-6 advantage. Binkley finished the game with seven points, two assists and one steal. Hart totaled six points, one assist and three steals.

“Logan had a really good game today. She really battled underneath, and this was a physical game, too,” Lewis said. “She did a good job underneath getting rebounds and giving us second-chance opportunities and just playing hard in general.”

From there, Sierra Benney scored two points off a layup, and following a timeout by HHS, Scott and Binkley both scored buckets for the 27-point lead. Following another Lady Indians timeout, it was Hillsboro breaking up the scoring run with a basket from Jordan Moberly. LC ended the second-quarter scoring with four points by Fittro for the 37-8 lead at halftime.

It was another strong scoring quarter in the third for the Lady Mustangs, winning the frame 16-9 for a 53-17 advantage. The third saw HHS score first with points from Moberly, only to see Fittro and Scott each score two points to make it a 41-10 score.

As the quarter continued, the Lady Indians had three baskets by Kelsey Burns and one point from Karleigh Hopkins. Burns totaled six points and one assist.

LC for the rest of the third frame had baskets by Fittro, Scott and Smith to build the 36-point lead. Smith finished the game with five points, three assists and two steals.

In the fourth, the final frame saw Lynchburg-Clay outscore Hillsboro, 11-6 with LC having points scored by Scott, Hart, Binkley and Katie McLaughlin for their 11 points in the frame. HHS had fourth-quarter scoring by Grover, Josie Hopkins and Gracie Dean.

“We didn’t shoot well for the game, and it didn’t seem like we played with a lot of energy,” Hillsboro head coach JR Moberly said. “I felt like we could have played harder and smarter. I know Peyton (Scott) is really good and asking just one of my girls to guard her man-to-man is tough, and we didn’t make rotations and execute some things I felt would help us there. And at the same time, we were missing three or four attempts in a row, and we just couldn’t get anything to fall.”

For the game, LC out-rebounded Hillsboro, 42-37. Also in the game, LC scored 26 of their points off turnovers, along with 34 points in the paint, eight second-chance points and 10 points from the bench. Hillsboro scored two points off turnovers, 16 points in the paint, 10 second-chance points and three bench points.

Next for Lynchburg-Clay is a home game on Monday, Jan. 21 as they are scheduled to host McClain in non-conference play.

“We have a strenuous schedule with the weather, and we have another one on Monday and Wednesday next week, but when it comes down to this time of the year it is always a grind,” Lewis said. “We like to see what we can go through and battle some adversity. To be able to go through all these games and to see we have some type of conditioning is good to see.

“We have to come ready to play against McClain, and it will be another game off our routine as we don’t have school. We have to try to match that intensity. We have to come ready to play, and we are looking forward to it.”

Hillsboro is scheduled to play again on Monday, Jan. 21 in a home game against Waverly.

“We have Waverly on Monday, and though they started out slow they are having a good season,” Moberly said of upcoming games. “Then we have go to Clinton-Massie, and they have been playing well, and we’ll wrap up the week against Miami Trace at home. We have some tough opponents coming up, but if we play like we have been playing prior to today, we can compete in those games.”
