GREENFIELD — Highland County rivals McClain and Hillsboro finally were able to take the field against each other early Saturday morning at Daryle C. Unger Field in Greenfield.
Though Hillsboro scored first, the Lady Tigers scored the most in their South Central Ohio League game, defeating the Lady Indians, 7-2.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday in Hillsboro, but on Saturday morning, the Highland County rivalry was renewed.
"We made some mental mistakes, but we got a couple key hits, and we took advantage of a couple of theirs," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "I thought Hillsboro battled and played hard.
"We had a lot of distractions, and we've got a lot of things we need to get better at if we want to contend for a league championship."
HHS was first to score, adding a run in the first and third innings for a 2-0 lead.
"We started off well, but we left too many runners on the bases later in the game," HHS head coach Krista George said. "We are starting to come together as a team, but they battled.
"We've been on our field four times this spring, and that does make a difference."
The first run scored by the Lady Indians came via senior A.J. Sanders, who took first with a base hit on the second pitch she saw. She advanced to second on a base hit by Jenni Middleton, and each runner stole a base. Sanders eventually scored the first run in the inning.
In the third, Sanders scored again, this time taking the bases on an infield error. She stole second and third base, scoring on a single by Middleton.
That was all the scoring by the Lady Indians, as they were held to four more base runners in the final four innings, with Tasha Hilterbran walking in the fourth, Sara Ray walking in the fifth, Sara Sexton getting hit by a pitch in the sixth and Taylor Moberly doubling in the seventh inning.
After the scoring by HHS, the Lady Tigers' bats woke up and did damage.
The first-place McClain squad scored three runs in the third, followed by a two-run fourth and two-run sixth to seal the win.
McClain's third inning started off with Emily Sterling being hit by a pitch. Frankie Wise followed with a single, and Cierra Landrum also had a base hit. All three runners crossed home with a double by Megan Dettwiller.
In the fourth, the Lady Tigers added two more runs for a 5-2 lead. The run scoring began with a two-out walk forced by Sterling, followed with a double by Wise. Both runners scored when Landrum reached first on a errant infield throw, on a bunt to first base, putting MHS up by three runs.
"It seems like when we get a two-run lead, we get comfortable," Haines said. "Have to credit the girls for battling and getting the win."
The final two McClain runs came in the sixth with Wise and Landrum each crossing the plate.
Wise began the inning with a single, reaching second on a steal. Landrum took first on an error, with Wise advancing to third.
"Frankie has been playing well the last three games," Haines said.
"She's hit the ball really well, leads us, gets on base and has made some great defensive plays. She played in centerfield for the first time (Saturday) and made a great play."
With one out, Jenna Perie scored Wise on a fielder's choice, and Morgan Dettwiller gained an RBI with a ground out, scoring Landrum.
The winning pitcher was Megan Dettwiller, who pitched six innings. Dettwiller allowed two runs (both unearned). This loss was charged to Haley Wisman. Landrum pitched in relief for MHS, and Sanders pitched in relief for the Lady Indians.
"Haley pitched an excellent game," George said. "This is her first year to pitch varsity, and she did an excellent job for us. AJ did a good job too, but we just made some mistakes in the field."
This past week for MHS has been productive, winning three SCOL games, including two wins against the Miami Trace Panthers on Thursday and Friday.
"I've challenged the girls. They have a lot of things going on, and I told them I understand that. Our focus hasn't been the way it should be, and that will help keep us in the top spot with Clinton-Massie," Haines said.
MHS has just one SCOL loss and 11 wins this season. HHS is 2-10 overall and 1-6 in the SCOL.
