Lady Tigers defeat Hillsboro in 3 sets

GREENFIELD — The McClain varsity volleyball team defeated Hillsboro in straight sets 27-25, 25-14 and 25-17 Tuesday night on their home floor, avenging an earlier season loss to the Lady Indians in the finals of the annual Spike and Dig Tournament.
“This was kind of a little payback,” McClain coach Emma Gall said. “I think we’re on an upswing now and getting better in every game, and if we can continue to do that by tournament time, we should be right where we need to be.”
The Lady Tigers won game one by the slimmest of margins. 27-25, and it was the most exciting game of the night with several ties and lead changes.
“I thought we played pretty well in that first set tonight and had a lot of kills, but after that we lost our intensity and focus that we normally play with,” Hillsboro coach Nichole Dickey said.

McClain basically led from start to finish in the next two games and were never really threatened while closing out the match in impressive fashion.
“Our communication has been a lot better recently, and we’ve implemented some things in practice that’s really starting to show on the courts,” Gall said. “Chayden Pitzer had a nice all-around game for us, and I thought Sarah Bennett served well, especially in the first two games.
“Jhaela Coleman also had some really good blocks at the net for us, and I thought our passing as a team was very good, too.
McClain will host Wilmington on Thursday night, and Hillsboro will return home Thursday to play East Clinton.
