HILLSBORO — After three years of finishing in second place, the Hillsboro Lady Indians are back in the driver's seat of the South Central Ohio League, sharing the girls soccer title with the Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons after a 7-1 win against the London Lady Red Raiders, Thursday.
Both the Lady Indians and Clinton-Massie tied in both of their regular season meetings and won their remaining 10 SCOL matches.
"It's good to get back to that status in the league again," HHS coach Leslie Molen said. "We fell short the past three seasons, so I'm happy for the girls for this achievement."
Not only did the Lady indians celebrate a league title, but they celebrated their nine seniors who played their final regular-season home match.
Seniors include: Sara Sexton, Lauren Grimes, Haley Wisman, Leah Pence, Kristy Hopkins, Gabby Sugden, Hailey McCoppin, Jordan Davis and Kayla Deatley.
"They've been a good group to coach," Molen said. "They have heart, desire and have good leadership. It will be hard to replace these nine girls."
As for the match against the Lady Red Raiders, Davis was first to score, 24 seconds into the match for the 1-0 score, off a kick that sailed 25 yards.
HHS increased their lead to 2-0 with Taylor Stanforth putting the ball past the keeper with 22:26 left in the opening half.
London's lone goal came with 21:55 remaining in the opening half, making it a 2-1 score when Courtney Colwell kicked the ball past HHS.
Following that goal by LHS, it was all Hillsboro, as they outscored the Lady Red Raiders, 5-0 for the remainder of the match.
HHS scored two more first-half goals, both from Grimes (14:24): one with the assist by Trista Rhodes, and with 4:23 left in the half with the assist from Pence, as she kicked it across the goal and Grimes tapped it in.
In the second half, Wisman was first to add to the the Lady Indians' lead with a goal at the 21:27 mark, from a short kick.
Madison Colliver made it a five-goal lead with a goal at the 12:07 mark, and the final goal came off the foot of Pence with 2:33 left on the scoreboard.
The win improves the Lady Indians to not only 10-0-2 in the SCOL, but 14-0-2 overall.
Sexton finished with two saves and three touches.
Hillsboro will host their sectional game on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. at Richards Memorial Field as they face the winner of Circleville/Adena.
"Our draw wasn't bad. The draw could have gone either way with the top three teams in the sectional," Molen said. "I'm a little concerned with a week layoff. It will be good to get a week off with the rest, but you don't want to get too relaxed."
