GREENFIELD - With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Hillsboro Lady Indians seemed to have the game easily in hand. County rival McClain had other plans. With two outs, MHS added six runs and had the winning run at the plate, but a catch by Heather Storer on a hard-hit line drive gave HHS the final out they needed to take an 8-6 South Central Ohio League win over the Lady Tigers.
"My seniors said this was their first win over Greenfield," HHS head coach Krista George said. "They (MHS) made it interesting, and other than the last inning, we played an excellent game."
The loss for MHS was their third in a row, and head coach Jarrod Haines said the rally of hits and runs didn't come soon enough for his ball club.
"To start hitting with two outs in the seventh was too late," Haines said. "Credit Hillsboro, they didn't make errors until the seventh. It seemed like we hit the ball, but couldn't get runs."
Hillsboro scored two runs each in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings for their eight-run total.
The first two runs of the game came in the top of the third with Paij Shelton drawing a walk with one out. Shelton scored off a RBI-single from A.J. Sanders. Jenni Middleton brought home Sanders with a base hit.
More runs came for the Lady Indians in the top of the fifth, with Shelton and Kaelee Sexton drawing lead-off walks. Sanders scored Shelton with a single, and Middleton scored Sexton for her second RBI in the first five innings.
In the top part of the sixth, HHS added two more runs with Mallori Ferguson reaching on an error. Savannah Reed followed by bringing in Ferguson with a single. Shelton then knocked in Reed with a base hit to make the score 6-0.
The final two insurance runs for HHS came in the top of the seventh with Middleton leading off with a single. Jennifer Williams was then hit by a pitch. Ferguson RBI-singled in Middleton, and Reed scored Williams with a ground out.
The late seventh inning rally by the Lady Tigers started with a walk by Alyssa Bean. Then HHS pitcher Kayla Rosselott recorded two straight outs.
With two outs, Jenna Perie and Alex Taylor singled. Morgan Dettwiller reached on an error, followed with Megan Dettwiller forcing a walk.
As the runs were being scored, the bases were loaded with the two Dettwillers and Sasha Lawwell. Kate Crabtree, with a 3-2 count, forced a base on balls to score Morgan Dettwiller.
Bean then walked to the plate with the bases jammed and smashed a double to left field to bring in Megan Dettwiller and Lawwell.
The game-tying runs were left on second and third bases.
Rosselott gained the win for Hillsboro. The loss was charged to Megan Dettwiller. Ashley Green pitched in relief for the Lady Tigers.
"Kayla pitched a great game," George said. "I went to the mound in the seventh and just told the girls to relax and play the game."
For the Lady Tribe, Middleton led with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, gaining one run and one RBI. Shelton and Sanders each went 1-for-3. Shelton plated two runs and Sanders had one run and one walk. Reed gained two RBIs.
Leading MHS at the plate was Kate Hammond at 2-for-3 with one hit by pitch. Gaining hits for MHS were Perie, Taylor, Morgan Dettwiller, Megan Dettwiller, Lawwell and Bean. Megan Dettwiller forced two walks.
The win improves the Lady Indians to 1-2 overall, 1-2 in the SCOL. MHS falls to 1-4 overall, 0-1 in the SCOL.
MHS will play Adena on Tuesday at AHS. HHS will face Chillicothe at home on Tuesday. Each games starts at 5 p.m.
