The Hillsboro Lady Indians weren’t able to gain a victory in their 2017 season opener, but they didn’t gain a loss, either. The Lady Indians opened the season at home, and in that match, they tied the visiting Eastern Brown Lady Warriors by a 3-3 score.

During the non-conference match, the Lady Indians and Lady Warriors were tied with a 2-2 score after the first 40 minutes of play. Hillsboro’s first goal in the opening half came at the 36:53 mark from Callan Myers. That goal gave HHS a 1-0 lead.

From there in the first half, the Lady Warriors scored goals at the 22:17 and 11:02 marks to take a 2-1 advantage.

Hillsboro tied the match with 12:06 left in the first half off a goal by Madi Marsh for the 2-2 score.

In the second half, each team was credited with a goal, with HHS taking a 3-2 lead with 24:58 left in regulation as Eastern Brown had an own goal. Eastern made up for the miscue with a goal of their own with 20:48 left on the scoreboard for the final 3-3 score.

“It is a tie … I told the girls it is kind of disappointing, but the positive is we didn’t lose,” HHS head coach Jeremy Ratcliff said. “There is just a lot of stuff to clean up, but I can’t fault their effort. I thought they played hard and are starting to come together.

“There is some rust on our touches and our pace of play. That is a scrappy Eastern team, and give them credit, they played hard and put up a really good fight. They will win a lot of games this year.”

Hillsboro’s Ellie Elmore was credited with an assist during the match.

For the game, the Lady Indians had eight shots on goal and a total of 16 shots. Hillsboro keeper Riley Moberly finished the match with five saves.

Ratcliff said his team had chances to win the game.

“We had a couple of unlucky bounces, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net,” he said. “Like I told the girls, we had our opportunities to win the game, and at some point we just have to capitalize on those opportunities, instead of being happy to get those opportunities. We have to get the ball in the back of the net.

“I thought we did a good job of trying to break down their defense. In the second half, we played a little simpler. We at least tried to possess the ball more in the second half and I thought gave us the number of opportunities we had to score. We’ll just have to regroup and come back to work.”

The tie leaves the Lady Indians at 0-0-1 overall. Their next match will be on Tuesday, Aug. 22 versus Unioto. They will also play on Thursday, Aug. 24 on the road at Western Brown. Both matches are non-conference.

To round out the month of August, the Lady Indians will host the Wilmington Hurricane on Saturday, Aug. 26, followed by two consecutive Frontier Athletic Conference matches on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at Washington and Thursday, Aug. 31 versus Jackson.
