Opening their 2018 season this week, the Hillsboro Lady Indians’ first two games of the season were at home where they lost to the visiting Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons in non-conference play and to the Miami Trace Lady Panthers in Frontier Athletic Conference action.

Hillsboro has three seniors on the roster this season — all of whom played varsity tennis last year — in Kenzie Adams, Johanna Holt and Julia Hart. Besides those three seniors, the current varsity roster consists of three sophomores in Alexia Nicholas, Caroline Crouch and Haley Norman, with the freshman being Miriam Studebaker.

On Tuesday night in their FAC opener, the Lady Indians lost to the Lady Panthers, 0-5, and although they didn’t win a match, Hillsboro head coach LaRue Turner was pleased with the improvement of his players from their first match on Monday night in a loss to Clinton-Massie.

“The biggest problem we have right now is the experience and just the young players that we have,” Turner said. “What we have to do is continue to play our best, learn from our mistakes and try to turn things around, and we will. We will get there, but it’s going to take a little time.

“The girls are out there doing the best they can, playing hard, and that’s all a coach can ask for. Three seniors are back from last year. The other girls that are playing came up from the JV team.

“I expect for us to continue to improve. I expect for us to get on the winning track here pretty soon, and we’re just going to be a better team later on this year. It’s not going to happen overnight, and it’s going to take a lot of work, but we’re going to do it.”

During the Tuesday conference showdown with Miami Trace, the Lady Indians lost first singles where MT junior Anita Pursell defeated Nicholas by scores of 6-0, 6-0.

In the second singles match Hillsboro’s Studebaker lost by the same scores of 6-0, 6-0 to MT junior Bailey Thompson. The third singles match saw MT junior Haiven Pepper defeated Crouch at 6-3, 6-2.

For the two varsity doubles teams, Adams and Holt lost their first doubles match in two closely played games where they fell by scores of 6-7 (tiebreaker) and 5-7 to MT juniors Cameron Butcher and Kyleigh Slone.

The second doubles match saw Hart and Norman lose to MT senior Hannah Clemons and junior Beth Hogsett at 4-6, 3-6.

In the season-opening match on Monday night against the Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons, HHS lost all five varsity matches.

The doubles matches saw Adams and Holt fall to CM juniors Kari Cragwall and Liza Duncan by scores of 3-6, 4-6. In the second doubles match, Hart and Norman fell to CM seniors Jenn Callewaert and Lindsey Amberger at 1-6, 2-6.

In the singles matches, Studebaker lost first singles to CM senior Hailey Clayborn at 0-6, 0-6. The second singles match saw Nichols fall to CM junior Nina Lazie at 0-6, 0-6. In third singles, Crouch dropped her match to CM junior Raelee Schulz at 0-6, 2-6.

“Last night, it seemed like the girls were nervous, and rightly so. When you have people coming up from JV, the first time they play varsity – until they get used to the ball coming back at them pretty quickly and getting their footwork correct, it’s going to happen like that,” Turner said. “I saw a lot of good footwork (Tuesday), and I saw a lot more effort tonight. As long as we can continue like this, we’ll be fine.”

The Lady Indians are scheduled to play again on Thursday, Aug. 16 when they hit the road to face the Chillicothe Lady Cavaliers in FAC action.
