Lady Indians shut out McClain

GREENFIELD — For the first 20 minutes of the opening half, the McClain girls soccer team played pretty even with Hillsboro, trailing just 1-0, until Lillian VanZant scored back-to-back goals late in the period to push the Lady Indians’ advantage to 3-0.
Jayme Maynard added another score right before the halftime horn, making it 4-0 at the break. Hope Tira scored Hillsboro’s opening goal of the contest at the 30-minute mark of the first period.
The Lady Indians ended up winning by a 10-0 score Tuesday night in their South Central Ohio League match at McClain Field.

“We can play well for about 20 minutes of the first half and be spot on, and then we seem to just start wearing down and making mistakes, which has been our Achilles heel all year,” McClain head coach Shawn Peterman said. “Then we kind of get down on ourselves, which makes it really hard to recover, and somewhere along the line we need to play as a team for the whole 80 minutes.”
The second half would be all Lady Indians, as they outscored McClain 6-0 with Tira and Callan Myers leading the way with two goals each. VanZant, Riley Moberly and Cadence Myers also each scored a goal in the second half for Hillsboro.
“It took us a while to wake up and get our intensity and focus,” Hillsboro head coach Jeremy Ratcliff said. “Greenfield came out feisty and ready to play, and they were pressuring the ball and really making things tough for us to play our game.
“I’m pleased with the effort that our girls eventually put in after they finally settled in (Tuesday).”
