Though the Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons already clinched the South Central Ohio League softball championship, their hopes of an undefeated season in league play was ruined by the Hillsboro Lady Indians Monday night.
The Lady Indians used stellar pitching from Hanna Breeden, along with various hits and runs from their offense, leading Hillsboro to a 7-5 victory at Alice Cassner Field.
"I told the girls to learn from this, to learn from last week and to put the bad games behind us," HHS head coach Katie Moberly said. "We had some nice strong hits, and they (CM) did too. It could be a different game at their place (Wednesday) because their fence is a little shorter than ours."
Hillsboro scattered their runs throughout the game with a two-run first, one run in the second, two more in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth innings.
The first inning for the Lady Indians saw Ali Stratton and Kerstin Thornburgh score runs as they took the base on a walk and single. They scored off a double to centerfield by Breeden.
HHS saw Savannah Scott round the bases for the third Lady Indians run of the SCOL contest. Scott singled to initially reach first base.
[[In-content Ad]]In the fourth, Scott and Stratton scored the fourth and fifth runs for the Lady Indians.
The final two runs were scored by Kirsten Juillerat in the fifth and Thornburgh in the sixth.
Washington scored all of their runs in the fourth and sixth innings, with two runs crossing the plate in the fourth and three in the sixth.
Breeden was the winning pitcher with a complete game. In seven innings, she allowed five runs (one earned) on eight hits and no walks. She finished with 10 strikeouts. Breeden ended the game by catching a line drive back to the circle.
"Hanna pitched well (Monday) and had strong defense behind her," Moberly said. "Everyone did what they were supposed to do and got the win."
HHS travels to Clinton-Massie on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
