For the second time this week, the Hillsboro Lady Indians left the softball diamond with a South Central Ohio League win, this time defeating the visiting East Clinton Lady Astros, 11-2 Friday night at Alice Cassner Field.

Though East Clinton took the lead with the game’s first two runs in the top of the first inning and held the lead after the inning was complete, the Lady Indians broke the game open with a second inning where they scored eight of their 11 runs in the league contest.

“We had one inning where we produced a lot of runs, but we still aren’t doing it consistently, which is something we need to do,” HHS head coach Katie Moberly said. “We had just one run (Thursday), and we had the one big inning (Friday), so we need to just become more consistent.

“Some of the younger players are stepping up, which is good, and others are on a little hiatus, but that’s all right and they will be back. The girls did hit the ball hard (Friday).”

In the second, HHS had Savannah Scott, Emily Loudin, Kerstin Thornburgh, Hanna Breeden (2), Madison Snyder, Riley Moberly and Ashleigh Baucom all rounding the bases for the eight-run total after the bottom of the second inning was complete.

For the remainder of the game, the Lady Indians scattered three more runs across the plate in the fourth inning for their 11 total runs.

In the fourth, Thornburgh, Breeden and Snyder all scored runs.

For the game, the Lady Indians totaled eight hits, eight walks and were hit by a pitch on three different occasions.

Madison Snyder led HHS at the plate at 3-for-4 with two runs, while Thornburgh, Breeden, Moberly, Baucom and Molly Ferguson each had one hit.

Of the eight walks forced by the Lady Indians, Loudin, Thornburgh, Breeden, Emily Myers each had one, while Moberly and Baucom both drew two walks. Scott, Thornburgh and Breeden all were hit by a pitch.

In the circle, Thornburgh was the winning pitcher, allowing just two runs in six innings of work. The senior finished with two strikeouts, while allowing five hits.

“Kerstin did a nice job of keeping East Clinton off-balanced,” Moberly said. “She hadn’t pitched in a while, so she did a really nice job with all of her pitches. That’s what we need to do. We can’t rely on our pitchers to keep striking out everyone … when the ball is in play, we have to get people out.”

HHS is off this weekend and will play again on Monday in SCOL play as they take on Wilmington at 5 p.m.

“Next week, we play Monday through Thursday, and that Saturday is prom, so it will be a very busy week for us,” Moberly said.
