The Hillsboro Lady Indians celebrated senior night on Wednesday in their regular-season finale, but the Madison-Plains Lady Golden Eagles won the non-conference match in three sets.

The visiting Lady Golden Eagles won by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-16 en route to the non-conference win at Hillsboro High School.

Before the match, the Lady Indians honored three seniors in team captain Sydney Bobbitt, Jordan Williamson and Kailey Dietrick. Bobbitt was also honored after the game for having over 500 digs in her career, finishing with 574 overall.

Head coach Nichole Dickey spoke about all three seniors.

“Sydney has been on varsity for four years now and finishes her career with 574 digs,” Dickey said. “I’m very proud of her, and she’s a girl who plays all the way around and has an excellent attitude, always gives everything and is also the team captain and has been for the past two years. Sydney is in the gym 30 minutes before practice time … the first one in and the last one out. She’s a great young lady.

“Kailey has played varsity for two years and is an outstanding young lady. I can’t say enough about her and all my seniors. They are all wonderful young ladies. Kailey’s serves have been spot-on and have had power. She’s doing very well for us.

“Jordan has been with us for four years, and she also works hard, comes to practice, puts in the time and doesn’t complain. Jordan always has 100 questions that she’ll ask, but we will miss that. She plays the back row really well. I want to wish all my seniors the best of luck.”

In the first set, the match was close early on with the score being tied at 10 times, lastly at 14-14, but the Lady Golden Eagles broke away with an 11-4 run on Hillsboro to win set one by a 25-18 score.

Some of the points in the first set were scored by Dietrick, Paige Loudin and Bobbitt, while others like Katie Condo, Hope Middleton, Julie Middleton, Gracie Dean, Williamson, Abby Brown and Dietrick all competed in the first set as well.

The second set wasn’t as close early on as MPHS built a 14-8 advantage, though Hillsboro (5-16) didn’t back down, with a point by Bobbitt at 17-11 and later she had a point at the net for a 19-13 deficit.

Hope Middleton then had a point and later Dietrick chipped in as well, but Madison-Plains was too strong, eventually winning set two, 25-17.

MPHS (16-10) and Hillsboro battled strong in the third with the score tied early and then HHS getting to within a point at 4-3 off a kill from Bobbitt.

Later, Dietrick added a point to the Hillsboro side of the scoreboard for a 13-8 deficit, getting the Lady Indians back to within five points of the visitors.

Again, Dietrick scored another point, as did Julie Middleton, but even then MPHS had built a seven-point lead at 17-10. Bobbitt and Dean tried to keep HHS in the third set with points, as did Bobbitt with a kill and an ace by Condo, but the final two points of the third set sent MPHS home with a win at 25-16.

“It seems to be our theme for the year of being close but just not getting there,” Dickey said. “Their blockers (MPHS) were quick. It didn’t matter if we were doing quick sets or whatever, they were all over us. If it wasn’t for the blocking, it would have been a little bit of a different game.”

Next for Hillsboro is a sectional tournament game on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at Sheridan, who are 19-3 overall this season and the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
