Though the defense of the Hillsboro Lady Indians was productive during their Frontier Athletic Conference game against the Miami Trace Lady Panthers on Wednesday night, their offense wasn’t on the same level. The Lady Indians were unable to convert shots into points, resulting in a 56-27 loss.

Hillsboro (1-2, 4-3) trailed by just six points at the end of the first frame, but the issue was they scored just two points in the eight-minute frame, as Miami Trace led 8-2 after one quarter of play. Hillsboro’s two points in that frame came from Madi Marsh at the 2:02 mark of the quarter as she scored her points while being fouled.

The second frame was a bit different for Miami Trace with them outscoring Hillsboro, 17-8 in the frame with the visitors beginning the quarter with a jumper and layup from Morgan Miller. HHS got back to within six points of the Lady Panthers with a jumper from Delaney Eakins and a layup from Marsh with 5:58 left in the quarter.

MT (3-0, 5-1) answered by going on a 9-0 run in a two-minute span, including a 3-pointer from Victoria Fliehman and points from Becca Ratliff and Shaylee McDonald for a 21-6 lead with 3:51 left on the clock. Eakins and Kayden Watson stopped the MT scoring run with back-to-back layups for the Lady Indians, only to see MT answer with four more points to end the first half for the 25-10 lead.

“I thought we did a good job in the first half defensively,” HHS head coach JR Moberly said. “For that matter, most of the night we did a good job defensively. They picked up some of those points because we turned the ball over, and we weren’t good offensively (Wednesday).

“The style of play pushed us out of our comfort level and dictated some of our adjustments and some things we just weren’t comfortable with yet. The result was high turnovers that (Miami Trace) turned into points. We missed a couple box outs, and it starts to roll.

“Overall, though, I thought we did a good job defensively. It was a very physical game, and our kids were upset about about it, and all you can do is adjust your game and be physical too. I thought in the second half our kids stepped up and did a better job of fighting back.”

The scoring was closer between the two teams in the third with MT outscoring the host Lady Indians 16-12 with MT leading 41-22 after three frames. In the third for MT, Fliehman sank a 3-pointer. For HHS in the third, Kayden Watson also sank a 3-pointer.

The fourth quarter saw HHS held to five points with Lana Grover sinking a 3-pointer and Jordan Moberly scoring two points. MT added 15 points to their total in the fourth with McDonald and Aubrey Schwartz knocking down 3-pointers.

Karleigh Hopkins led HHS with seven points, and Marsh followed with six points. Watson scored five points. Also for HHS, Eakins finished with four points, Grover tallied three and Moberly scored two points.

MT was led in scoring for the game by Fliehman with 15 points and McDonald with nine points. Morgan Miller totaled eight points, and Tanner Bryant scored seven points.

Next for the Lady Indians is an FAC game on the road at Chillicothe on Saturday, Dec. 17.
