After a strong first half by the Hillsboro Lady Indians, a 21-point third by the Fayetteville Lady Rockets allowed them to pull away, defeating the Lady Indians 53-40 Monday night at Hillsboro High School.

With the score tied at nine after the first quarter, Fayetteville gained a three point lead at the half with a 15-12 battle in the second quarter.

In the third the Lady Rockets gained a 43-31 advantage, and in the fourth the Lady Indians won 9-8.

Jenni Willey led HHS with 15 points, followed by Megan Barnes with nine. All nine points by Barnes came from three 3-pointers.

Shelby Coyle made one 3-pointer, finishing the game with eight points. Heather Storer gained five points, followed by Julie Shafer with two points, and Annemarie Stamper finished with one free throw conversion.

“Jenni Willey, Meagan Barnes and Shelby Coyle had good offensive nights. Annemarie Stamper and Julie Shafer did a great job of defending (Shelby) Sheets,” HHS head coach Herb Mihalik said.

Shelby Brown led the Lady Rockets with 14 points, making two 3-pointers against the Lady Indians. Shelby Sheets gained 11 points in the FHS win. Sheets was 7 of 9 from the free-throw line. Emily Stahl gained nine points for the Lady Rockets.

HHS was 6 of 16 from the free-throw line, while the Lady Rockets were 19 of 29.

“The coaches are very proud of how the girls played hard and executed our game plan against a team that was 11-3 coming into the game,” Mihalik said. “We did not shoot the ball well at the foul line. That was the difference in the ball game.”

The loss drops HHS to 1-13 overall, Fayetteville jumps to 12-3.

HHS will play again Thursday as they travel to Blanchester.
