Learning the varsity game on the go is the story of the 2017 Hillsboro Lady Indians, and on Wednesday night, they showed some improvement as they continue to battle through the early stages of the season, as they lost their home game against the Washington Lady Blue Lions, 9-4.

The game was called after six innings due to lightning and impending weather, but in the South Central Ohio League loss, the Lady Indians scored their runs with two in the first, one in the fourth and one in the fifth.

“We try to do a little better every day. They are learning, and it is going to be a process,” HHS head coach Katie Moberly said. “Today we got the runners on, but we just couldn’t get them around. At least we are getting runners on, and that is a positive, and everyone is moving around and talking to each other.

HHS saw junior Riley Moberly and freshman Jordan Moberly score the first two HHS runs, with one of the runners batted in by senior Lizzy Mahan on a sacrifice.

In the fourth, HHS had a run scored by sophomore Heather Burba, reaching the bases via walk. She was batted in by sophomore Jordan Williamson for the RBI. The fifth-inning run by the Lady Indians was scored by Jordan Moberly, with the RBI going to freshman Haley Hughes.

The Lady Indians totaled four hits, with Hughes leading the way at 2-for-3 with one RBI. Also with hits for HHS were sophomore Ashley Lykins and Jordan Moberly. Mahan and freshman Regan Kiley each forced a walk.

Moberly was charged with the loss, going five innings in the pitching circle. She finished with seven strikeouts, while allowing eight hits and walking seven.

“I thought Riley pitched well,” Moberly said. “Christine (Page) has been having some soreness, and that comes early in the season, but I thought Riley stepped up and pitched well. Christine did pitch one inning, and she stepped up and pitched well when she came in.”

Washington scored two runs in the first, followed by a one-run third, three runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth inning.

The winning pitcher was Meghan Tucker of the Lady Blue Lions.
