ZT’s Corcoran, Morgan Arledge and Justine Pontius combined for the next seven points to take the lead away from Hillsboro at 37-33 with 3:18 remaining in regulation. The Lady Indians came back with layups from Taylor Chaney and Kelsey Burns with the assist from Madi Marsh, tying the score at 37 with 2:35 left in the quarter.
The score stayed tied until there were 16.4 seconds left in the final frame with Pontius making two free throws for ZTHS in what ended up being the game-winning basket, as ZT gained possession of the ball off a steal on a HHS pass, then went to the free-throw line after being fouled in the paint.
Both teams then called timeouts to set up plays, but the Lady Indians were forced into another turnover with time running out on the clock. HHS finished by committing 24 turnovers.
“It’s unfortunate, because I thought our girls battled hard, and we just couldn’t create our break,” Hillsboro head coach JR Moberly said. “We weren’t able to create the break we needed at the end to finish it off. Zane Trace is a well-coached team, and they executed down the stretch and did what they had to do that we weren’t able to.
“I thought our kids battled and played hard, and we had good contributions from a lot of kids. We’ve just got to figure out how to win.”
The first three quarters were just as close for both teams with the Lady Indians leading 9-6 after the first quarter as Lana Grover sank three two-point baskets, while Chaney chipped in with two points and Kaley Burns sank a free throw. Grover led all scorers with 11 points, while Burns scored 10 points.
HHS was held to six points in the second frame with Natalie Sullivan, Kelsey Burns and Kaley Burns each making a two-point basket, while ZT scored nine points for a 15-15 score at halftime.
Both teams kicked up their scoring in the third frame as the score was tied at 22 and 26, as HHS outscored the visitors, 16-11.
In the third, ZT held a 26-24 lead following a 3-pointer by Hannah Unger with 3:06 left in the quarter. But for the remainder of the quarter, the Lady Indians scored the final five points for a 31-26 score.
As for ZT, their leading scorer was Sydney Shively with 10 points. For HHS, final scoring included Sullivan and Chaney with four points and Marsh with two points.
For the game, HHS was 4-of-8 from the free-throw line, while ZTHS went 10-of-14. Hillsboro was 15-of-45 from the field.
HHS will play again on Saturday, Feb. 11 at McClain to wrap up the South Central Ohio League and regular season.
