Opening day for the Hillsboro Lady Indians resulted in a tough loss on Monday night, losing to the visiting Unioto Lady Shermans in five innings by a 15-0 score.

The run-rule loss by the Lady Indians at Alice Cassner Field saw them have a total of six base runners off one hit, one error and four walks.

“Unioto is a good ball team, but our girls gave a lot of effort,” HHS head coach Katie Moberly said. “They didn’t fold and they didn’t give up.”

In the bottom of the first, the Lady Indians had a base runner following Riley Moberly forcing a two-out walk on a 3-1 count. In the second for HHS, Haley Hughes reached first base on an error, again with two outs. HHS gained two base runners in the third with a base hit by Mallory Parsons and a walk from Moberly.

Ashley Lykins had a one-out walk in the fourth inning for HHS, and in the fifth inning it was Jordan Williamson who forced a one-out walk to give the Lady Indians their final base runner of the game.

The winning pitcher for Unioto was Haley Holt, who pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts. Amelia Willis and Carly Adkins each had two hits for UHS in their non-conference win over Hillsboro.

Hillsboro doesn’t play again until next week, and that could be good for the Lady Indians, as Moberly said it will give her team the time needed to work on improving in areas of their game.

“The girls never gave up, they never quit and they are a young team. They are starting to figure things out, and this is just the fifth time we’ve been outside this spring. Once you get outside, you start learning a little bit more,” Moberly said. “We don’t play again next week, so we have plenty of time to fix what we didn’t do right today and try again next week.”

The game originally scheduled against Blanchester for March 27 was canceled due to a scheduling conflict for BHS. The Lady Indians are scheduled to play again on April 3 at Waverly in non-conference play.
