A dominating effort by the Hillsboro Indians soccer team in their first home match of the season led to the team also winning their Frontier Athletic Conference opener Tuesday night, with the Indians winning by an 8-1 score.
In very hot, 90-degree weather, the Indians — who are now 2-1 on the season — had an excellent first half of soccer, where they scored six goals and forced a shutout in the first half for a 6-0 advantage.

“We got off to a quick start, and it took a little settling down,” Hillsboro head coach John Weber said. “We did put some goals in, but we were definitely rusty. Overall, though, after we buckled down and passed the ball pretty well, the ball moved pretty smoothly out of the midfield out to the wings. There are things to improve on, but it’s always great to have a good, solid win on your first home game.
“We normally have the tendency to start out slow and then build up as the game goes, so actually, that was an improvement on our game. Normally, it takes us at least a good 10 minutes before we’re able to actually start putting some balls in the back of the net. It was nice to start out pretty quick and get that goal there in the first few minutes just to calm the guys down, especially being the first home game and because that’s been one of our Achilles heels lately. We can get shots in the game, we just can’t bury them – at least that’s been the start of our season so far.”
The first half saw goals from junior Ethan Snapp, senior Logan Crafton, senior Quinn Conlon, senior Brian Shanahan and senior Andrew Gunderman who scored two goals in the first half for the six-goal advantage. Gaining assists on those goals were Crafton, Gunderman, Shanahan, Conlon and junior Brock Haines who had two assists in the opening 40 minutes of action.
In the second half, Hillsboro outscored the visiting Blue Lions in the FAC opener 2-1, with the Tribe gaining goals from Conlon and junior Hunter Hice, with Conlon scoring his goal less than a minute into the second half and Hice following a few minutes later.
Washington broke the shutout with a goal in the second half.
Weber spoke about the early season for the Indians.
Next for the Indians is a road FAC match on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Jackson and then on Saturday, Sept. 1 the Indians will be on the road at Western Brown before the annual break takes place for the Highland County Fair.
“We have two more matches this week. We go to Jackson Thursday, and on Saturday we go to Western Brown. This is going to be our roughest schedule because during fair week we have nothing, but at the end of fair week we have a nice strong Wilmington club waiting for us,” Weber said. “Jackson is going to be super strong, and that’s where we’re going to see where we’re at in the league.
“Overall, we move the ball well. Defensively, considering we replaced the whole back line – three out of the four are new starters, one is a player who’s never played soccer until this year and one is a freshman – we’re improving. That’s the big thing. We just look to keep improving and building wins for the year.”
