DODSONVILLE — The Hillsboro Indians and the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs had completely opposite days on the baseball diamond Friday night, with the Indians putting the ball in play and taking advantage of their hot bats and stout pitching for a 14-0 non-conference victory.

Hillsboro controlled all aspects of the game, beginning with the first inning where they opened the game with Mason Stanley reaching first base on an error. Following the first out of the game, Kelton Anderson tripled to right field to score Stanley. In the ensuing at-bat, Ethan Watson grounded out to second but had an RBI as Anderson raced home from third base for a two-run lead.

Next, Luke Magulac singled to left field, then after reaching second base, he stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Jared Thompson reached first base on an error, and that was followed by a walk forced by Grant Crum, but those runners were left on the bases as the third out was recorded via strikeout, leaving the Indians in front by a 3-0 score.

In the top of the second inning, Dylan Boone drew a lead-off walk and then stole second base. Next, Stanley reached on an error with Boone advancing to third base. Stanley followed by stealing second base, and Bell drew a four-pitch walk. Anderson followed with a line drive double to right field to score Stanley and Boone.

Still in the second inning, Watson hit a sacrifice fly to plate Bell for a 6-0 lead. As the inning continued, Thompson singled to left field to score Anderson for a seven-run lead. Following Thompson stealing second base, Crum forced a full-count walk, but the inning ended with a ground out with Hillsboro leading 7-0 after the four-run inning.

Hillsboro added six runs in the top of the third beginning with a walk forced by Boone, followed by Stanley taking first base after being hit by a pitch. Next, Bell singled to centerfield, moving both runners a base to lead the bases. Anderson doubled to left field for three RBI as Boone, Stanley and Bell all scored runs. Watson added to the Hillsboro hits with a single to left field, followed by Justin Hughes loading the bases on a walk with a 3-2 count.

Thompson was hit by a pitch to score Anderson, keeping the bases loaded. From there, Crum singled to score Watson, and Haines later doubled to right field to score Hughes, making it a 13-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Indians scored one final run with Stanley batting in Christian Weseloh as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. In the inning, Thompson singled to centerfield with one out, followed by Weseloh being hit by a pitch. With two outs, Brennen Priest singled to centerfield to move Weseloh to third, where he eventually scored on the hit by pitch for the 14-0 lead.

“Today was one of those good team wins,” HHS head coach Matt Garman said. “Everyone got involved, and we had guys out there making plays. A couple shoutouts go to 'Chicago' Christian Weseloh, who made a couple nice plays at second base and got on base a couple times, and Brennen Priest hit the ball well today.

“We had a lot of guys come in and contribute.”

For the game, the Indians totaled 14 hits and no errors, while the Mustangs had four hits and three errors.

Ethan Humphries was the winning pitcher for the Indians, pitching four innings and facing 15 batters. In his 51 pitches thrown, Humphries allowed no runs on two hits and one walk. He finished the outing with two strikeouts.

Justin Scott pitched one inning of relief for HHS, where he faced five batters. In just 18 pitches, Scott allowed no runs on two hits and no walks, as he also totaled one strikeout.

The loss was charged to Caden Hess, who pitched two innings. Hess allowed seven runs, but just two were earned, on four hits and four walks in 72 pitches. Hess finished with two strikeouts. Also pitching in relief was Austin Proctor for three innings.

LC now stands at 7-7 overall, and the Indians improved to 8-11 on the season.

“This is the right time of the year to start clicking, with back-to-back wins to end the week. Next week we have a big week with four games, so we hope we can keep rolling and roll right into the tournament and make a run,” Garman said.
