HILLSBORO — On a night where six Hillsboro boys senior soccer players were honored before their match Thursday night, the entire Indians soccer team returned to form as they defeated the London Red Raiders, 8-0 at Richards Memorial Field.

Hillsboro tied LHS in their previous meeting two weeks ago, and HHS coach John Weber said you could see the improvement in this team in the match.

"That was a good team effort," he said. "We are playing much better soccer than what we have been playing. The last time we played them we missed 40 shots, but tonight we hit our shots and scored goals.

"Credit London, though … they came here with 12 players as they have had a lot of injuries, and they played tough."

The Indians scored five goals in the first half for a 5-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Scoring first was Michael Theobold at the 36:29 mark, by with a goal by Brandon Carter with the assist by Colton Wertsbaugh with 29:14 left on the first-half clock.

Reese Leibreich kicked the ball past the diving LHS keeper with 22:14 left in the opening half, and Jarrod Hart came back with 20:20 with a goal of his own for a 4-0 HHS advantage.

The final first-half goal was scored by Trey Moberly with 7:13 remaining.

In the second half, Brandon Wilson scored two goals, with 19:21 and 8:34 left in the match. The final HHS goal came from Alex Rhoads with 2:58 left in regulation.

At goal for HHS during the shutout was Corey Walker.

"We controlled the ball the whole time except for a few minutes in the second half," Weber said. "All the seniors played great."

The seniors honored on Thursday were: Jerry Bailey, Tyler Greigo, Michael Theobold, Corey Walker, Colton Wertsbaugh and Brandon Wilson.

"It's been a privilege to coach all of them," Weber said. "I've coached five of them all four years, and they all are easily coachable. They are always willing to give 100 percent every game.

"I appreciate all their hard work."

Hillsboro will play in their sectional tournament semifinal match on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at Fairfield-Union at 6 p.m. The winner will play in the sectional final on Saturday, Oct. 22 against the McClain Tigers at McClain Field in Greenfield.

"Going in the tournament (HHS has one regular-season game remaining), we are playing much better soccer," Weber said. "Fairfield-Union tied Miami Trace, and we both have very similar records. It could have been a coin flip to see who got the No. 4 or No. 5 seed. We got the No. 5 seed, but it will be a battle between two even squads."

The win lifts HHS to 7-5-3 overall.
