WILMINGTON — For the first quarter, things went pretty well for the Hillsboro Indians as they faced the Division I state-ranked Wilmington Hurricane on the road at Fred Summers Court, Tuesday.
That first quarter saw the Indians battle the one-loss Hurricane team to a three-point deficit at 15-12. That was as close as the visiting Indians would get as they eventually lost by a 90-43 score in their South Central Ohio League matchup.
The loss moves the Indians to 3-6 in the SCOL and 7-9 overall, while Wilmington moves to 9-0 in the league and 16-1 overall.
As for that first quarter by the Indians, it was D.J. Brown who scored the first two points of the game, but from there Wilmington's Jarron Cumberland (who led all scorers with 24 points) and Jaevin Cumberland combined for the next five points to put WHS ahead 5-2.
The Indians were able to answer with four free throws from Zach Young to push HHS in front at 6-5 with 5:17 left in the first. Young finished the game with 11 points.
"Early we are down three midway through the second quarter, and we did a great job rebounding in the first half," HHS head coach Bruce Miles said. "The second half, they hurt us on the boards. We didn't box out, had some missed assignments and some miscommunication.
"We gave up some wide-open layups, and I thought the effort was there. We knew coming in they had played four games in five nights, and for us to have success, we had to get out to a quick start."

"Attacking their pressure was really good for us."
