GREENFIELD — The Hillsboro Indians varsity baseball team improved to 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in the South Central Ohio League after a convincing 13-0 five-inning run-rule victory over the McClain Tigers Wednesday night.

Hillsboro used a solid pitching performance by senior starter Cayse Cameron and senior reliever Sajoun Jones to shut out the Tigers and in the process limited them to just three hits, all coming in the second inning.

“Today was just our day,” Hillsboro head coach Matt Garman said. “We made plays, our pitching was fantastic and we hit the ball well. This was the first game all year that we really came out hitting the ball, and it was really nice to see us start a game as focused as we were offensively, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings.

“We don’t need any more runs than that when Cayse (Cameron) and Sajoun (Jones) are pitching. So, when you do that, you usually win ballgames.”

While the Indians pitchers were blanking the McClain batters, the Hillsboro sticks were on fire. The Indians pounded out 12 hits in the five-inning affair while plating the aforementioned 13 runs.

After scoring four times in each of those first two innings, the Indians added one in the third, two more in the fourth and scored a pair in the fifth to close out the scoring in the ballgame.

“I’m very disappointed in our effort tonight,” McClain head coach Richie Bunner said. “We know talent-wise, Hillsboro is the better team, but after we beat a pretty good Washington team I thought it would give us some life. But, today we show up and just lay an egg, and that’s the biggest disappointment.

“I don’t know which Jekyll or Hyde team is going to show up, and I told our kids after the game that the score should probably have been 5-0 or 7-0, but not 13-0. I also mentioned that’s our cross-county rival, which makes it even more embarrassing.”

Hitting leaders for the Indians were Brian Smith at 2-for-2 with a double and three runs. Also for the Indians, Payton Bell went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run, while Mason Stanley had a double and three runs. The Indians also had production from Cameron with a double, one RBI and two runs, while Ethan Watson was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Jacob Easter led McClain with a double, followed by Sam Faulconer and Hunter Rumer, who each had a single in the ballgame to complete their hitting.

Rumer was also the hard-luck losing pitcher for the Tigers despite pitching a pretty solid game, as did reliever John Salyers, who gave up only two runs in the final two innings.

“The talent level on this team is really good, even though we didn’t show it tonight,” Bunner said. “We are a very young team, starting two freshmen and three sophomores. Sometimes the success of a team is not always wins and losses, but by how you graduate to that next level, and we are just not there yet.”

McClain drops to 3-4 on the season and 1-4 in the SCOL.
