MT. STERLING — Ten days since their last match at Wilmington, the Hillsboro Indians returned to the field with a hat-trick from Michael Theobold and a 5-2 win over the Madison-Plains Golden Eagles, Tuesday at MPHS.
The win, which was a South Central Ohio League victory, puts the Indians at 5-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the SCOL. The Indians' lone loss came against Unioto, and their tie was against the McClain Tigers.
Not only had the Indians had 10 days in between matches due to the Highland County Fair, but in that span they had just one practice, and coach John Weber said it showed.
"This was our worst game of the year, and when you don't have practice or a game for over a week … it shows," he said. "That's what happens … it was a lot of rust, that's all it was. We'll have time to practice before our next game, and we'll get back to our regular form."
Theobold scored one goal in the first half and added two more in the final 40-minute half for the aforementioned hat-trick.
His first goal came 22 seconds into the match, putting the Indians up 1-0.
A goal from Jordan O'Connor put the Tribe ahead by two goals with 28:30 remaining in the first half.
Weber said the Indians had a couple mental breakdowns on defense, and the Golden Eagles made it a one-goal match, with Devin Kilbarger kicking the ball into the back of the goal with 14:56 left in the opening 40-minute half.
Brandon Wilson put HHS back up by two goals with 6:09 remaining in first half when he knocked the ball past the keeper of the Golden Eagles.
In the second half, HHS outscored the Golden Eagles 2-1, but it was MP who scored first in the second half, making it a one-goal match.
The second Golden Eagle goal came from Nick Wolfe with 33:49 left in the match, but his goal was later answered by Theobold with two more goals at the 29:37 and 23:07 marks of the second half.
"Michael had a great performance for us. He spread the ball around well and created a lot of the passes," Weber said.
With 30:26 left in the second half, the match was stopped due to an ankle injury to Reese Leibreich, who did not return. The Indians controlled the tempo for a majority of the match, getting numerous shots at goal.
The Indians will play again on Tuesday, Sept. 20 as they will travel to face the Washington Blue Lions at Gardner Park in Washington C.H. with a 5 p.m. start.
