One of the more physical soccer matches of the soccer season thus far was also one of the closest, as Highland County rivals Hillsboro and Lynchburg-Clay finished tied at 2-2 in their non-conference match at Richards Memorial Field.
The 2-2 tied score didn't come without some excitement in the second half, as three of the four goals came in the final 40 minutes, with the final two goals scored with under two minutes remaining.
With the score tied at 1-1, it was Lynchburg-Clay senior Alex Pinkerton putting the Mustangs in front by a 2-1 score with a header, as there was 1:18 left on the scoreboard clock.
It looked as if the win belonged to LC, but the Indians had other plans, with D.J. Brown tying the score off a cross kick from teammate Kobe Curtis with 10.8 seconds left in the match.
"It was really a back-and-forth match," HHS head coach John Weber said. "Lynchburg-Clay was charged in the second half, and we were not aggressive enough.
"Quite frankly, it took them (LC) going up on us for our guys to want to score goals."
The lone goal for the first half came on a penalty kick with Trey Moberly scoring the goal with 18:09 remaining in the opening 40 minutes.
[[In-content Ad]]Before the penalty kick, there was a collision in front of the goal with players colliding while going for possession of the ball and the goal. The collision left LC keeper Devin Pierson injured, as the EMS had to transport him to the hospital.
For a match that was physical from the start (there were three yellow cards issued within the first 20 minutes), the action was intense in the first half, especially with LC taking shots at the goal.
As for the overall intensity of the Highland County rivalry, the match saw a total of five yellow cards.
In a span of under 3:00 in the first half, Hillsboro keeper Maverick Ward made three diving saves to keep the lead in favor of HHS by one goal.
With those three saves, one with 10:01 remaining saw Ward make a diving stop, making the save with one hand.
"I'm proud of the play on the field," Weber said. "We were a little rusty since we've been off since Wednesday."
In the second half, Pinkerton tied the score at 1-1 with a goal from around 25 yards away with 11:40 left in regulation.
"This was a hard-fought game," LC head coach Dennis West said. "The guys played well, and with this game being between two county rivals, that is the way it should be."
