As solid as the first quarter was for the Hillsboro Indians where they led after eight minutes, the remainder of the non-conference game against the Western Brown Broncos didn’t go near as smoothly, with HHS falling to the visitors, 69-60.

Even with 10 3-pointers for the Indians, that wasn’t enough to overcome four quarters of Western Brown basketball where they scored no less than 13 points in each frame.

The Indians (7-11) have been battling the flu and sickness in recent games, and with players returning to the court while still battling those elements, Hillsboro got off to a strong start with an eight-point lead at the 4:36 mark of the first frame at 11-3.

In the early moments of the first frame, Hillsboro’s Hunter Price was first to score with a 3-pointer, though that was answered with a trey by Jackson Miller. Hillsboro was waiting with another 3-pointer from Price, along with a basket by Lawton Parry and a 3-pointer by Ryan Scott, for the aforementioned 11-3 lead with 4:36 left in the opening frame. Scott finished the game with 11 points.

HHS added to their lead with four more points with baskets by Brad Miller and Scott for a 15-7 advantage. Western Brown snapped the 12-0 run with a 3-pointer, but the Indians came back with a free throw by Quintin Captain, with the Indians ending the first frame with a 16-13 lead. Captain finished the game with 11 points, while Miller tied for the team lead in scoring for the game with 14 points.

The second quarter saw the Indians go from leading by four points following a free throw from Captain to start the quarter, only to see them trail by 15 points at halftime by a 36-21 score, as Western Brown won the quarter at 23-5.

Hillsboro’s remaining scoring in the second consisted of a free throw by Coltin Hunter and a three-point play by Scott.

The Indians still trailed by 17 points after three frames, though they did start the third with two 3-pointers from Parry at the 7:36 mark and the 6:38 mark of the third for a 36-27 deficit, cutting the WBHS lead to nine points. Parry finished tied for the HHS lead in scoring for the game with 14 points.

Hillsboro scored a total of 13 points in the third with Scott sinking a 3-pointer and Miller making two layups for a 51-34 score in favor of Western Brown, as they scored 15 points in the third frame, including nine points by Zyon Tull, who led the Broncos with 29 points.

In the fourth, the Indians cut the WBHS lead to 14 points with a basket by Miller and 3-pointer from Caleb Crawford, then to 12 points following a basket by Captain. Later, Captain made two free throws, and with 4:35 left in the quarter it was Miller who again cut the Broncos’ lead to 12 points for a 57-45 score.

With 3:42 left in regulation, Parry sank a 3-pointer to make it a nine-point deficit, but after points by the Broncos that built their lead to 14 points again, Miller made two free throws with 2:42 left in the fourth. At the 2:14 mark of the fourth, it was Captain sinking two free throws, and with 15.3 left on the clock it was a 3-pointer by Parry that made it a 10-point game.

Western Brown added two free throws, but at the buzzer Captain made one final 3-pointer for HHS. More leading scorers for the Broncos included Chance Moore with 11 points and Miller with 10 points.

Next for the Indians is a non-conference game against the Unioto Shermans Wednesday, Feb. 5 on the road.
