CHILLICOTHE — Trailing for three quarters as the McClain Tigers played tough defense, it was the Hillsboro Indians who charged their way to the top in the final eight minutes as they used defensive pressure, mixed with a 25-point outburst in the final frame as they defeated the Tigers for the third time this season, winning the Division II SE District Sectional Semifinal 50-36 Wednesday night at Southeastern High School.
With the Tigers leading 31-25 after 24 minutes, things looked to be going the way of McClain, but the Indians may have been down, but they weren't out.
The Indians came back in the fourth frame to outscore MHS 25-5, starting with a 3-pointer from HHS junior Colt Coates. Coates finished with 14 points against rival McClain.
In a game full of charge calls, the Tigers were then called with a charge foul at the 7:34 mark, and the Indians capitalized with a jumper by HHS senior Airic Steagall. Hillsboro senior Dylan Barreras followed with two points as the post player rushed his way to the basket to give the Indians their first lead since the opening frame at 32-31 with 6:21 left on the clock.
HHS junior Aric Carroll then put the game in his control as he nailed a 3-pointer, followed with a steal and fast break layup for five straight points, giving the Indians a six-point advantage with nearly five minutes remaining.
The Indians continued their fourth quarter assault on the hoop with Eli Hogsett scoring two points on a layup. The 14-0 run by HHS to start the fourth was ended with a steal and basket by MHS senior Lucas Polley. MHS junior Zach Matracia then took a charge in the paint, but the Tigers were unable to take advantage of the opportunity.
With 2:21 left in the game, Steagall, who scored a team-high 17 points, knocked down a 3-ball for his fifth point of the quarter, putting HHS up 42-33.
Polley answered with two points in the paint, but at the 1:29 mark Steagall was clutch again, this time taking the ball full court for a jumper.
Each team then exchanged free throw shots with Coates and Steagall scoring the final three HHS points.
In the game HHS had 19 total turnovers, while the Tigers committed 17.
If the first quarter was going to be any indication of what was lying ahead for either team, then it would have been off as the Indians and Tigers scored a combined 18 points in the first quarter, with the Tigers leading 10-8 after eight minutes.
For HHS, the first quarter belonged to Barreras as he scored first with an inside bucket. Barreras scored six of the eight HHS points in the quarter.
MHS senior Logan Wise tied the game at two early on, but Coates and Barreras put HHS up four with 4:38 left in the first.
Matracia and Polley combined for five straight points for the Tigers, with Polley netting his points off an HHS turnover, as the senior converted an old-fashioned three-point play. Polley finished with the game-high in scoring at 18 points.
Wise ended the first with a bang as he sank a 3-pointer from the corner, right in front of the Hillsboro bench with 4.3 left in the quarter to put MHS up 10-8.
McClain continued their defense dominance in the second as they held HHS to five points in the quarter, while extending their lead to 22-13 after 16 minutes of play.
Neither team opened up hot in the second on the offensive side with each team being called for charge fouls, and the first points of the quarter were scored at the 5:17 mark when Polley sank a jumper, followed with a free throw by MHS senior L.T. Walters. MHS scored their fifth straight point of the second with Polley nailing a 3-pointer at the 3:29 mark, doubling the HHS output at 16-8.
Carroll scored his first points of the game at just the right time for the Indians as the junior made a basket from beyond the arc, followed with Steagall, who came off the bench near the end of the first quarter, scoring his first points of the game with a stand-up jumper.
MHS finished the second with points from Polley and Wise, as Wise nailed his second trey of the game, this time from the corner in front of the Hillsboro student section. Wise scored 10 total points.
After three quarters, the Tigers led by six points. Matracia started the quarter by taking a charge and then followed up the defensive effort with two points at the 6:39 mark to put the Tigers up 24-13.
Later in the quarter Coates sank a jumper to bring the Tribe within nine of tying the score.
Coates then made the score 26-19 with a fadeaway jumper, but his points were answered by Polley with put back points.
Each team then had numerous opportunities to score points in the paint, but the shots wouldn't fall in the latter stages of the quarter.
With 2:07 remaining Hogsett put down two points to cut the Tigers' lead to seven at 27-21, and with 1:36 left in the same frame Coates made a 3-point shot while being fouled in the process. The senior converted the four-point play for the Indians to slash the MHS lead to 28-25.
The final points of the third came with a 3-pointer by MHS senior Caleb Gregory.
MHS shot 14 of 41 for 34 percent, while HHS was 19 of 34 for 56 percent from the field. In the first half the Tigers shot 50 percent from the floor, while HHS was in the 30 percent range in the same half.
