After dropping their season opener the day before, the Hillsboro Indians got things back on track Thursday at Shaffer Park.
Behind a five-inning, three hit pitching performance from Garrett Bell, along with eight errors committed by the Clinton-Massie Falcons, the Tribe gained their first win of the season by a score of 11-1.
Bell hit his spots while on the mound, according to assistant and pitching coach Chuck Coleman.
"This was a great game from (Bell)," he said. "He hit the right spots, and his curve was working well."
Bell had a perfect game in the fourth inning with two outs.
After each team put up zeros after one complete inning, it was the Tribe who defended their home field and scored seven times in the bottom of the second inning.
Logan Watson started with a base hit, followed by Patrick Garman taking first on an error by the Falcons. Logan Wilson knocked in both runners with a two-RBI hit. Dow Kiefer and Bell followed with walks.
Aric Carroll reached first on an error, allowing Kiefer to score a run to give HHS a 3-0 lead.
A.J. Helterbrand forced the third walk of the inning. Watson, in his second at-bat of the inning, blasted a two-run double to bring home Bell and Carroll. Corey Walker finished the hit parade in the second inning with a sacrifice RBI to left field to score Helterbrand.
The improved presence at the plate continued from the Tribe in the fourth inning with two more runs scoring.
Helterbrand and Airic Steagall forced walks, followed with each runner taking a base on a double steal.
Watson gained his third RBI of the South Central Ohio League game when he singled in Helterbrand. Garman followed by reaching on a fielder's choice and Wilson scored Watson with a base hit.
The game ended in the bottom of the fifth with Paul Snyder and Carroll each forcing a base on balls.
With two outs, Steagall hit a two-run double that run-ruled the Falcons, giving the Indians the SCOL win. Steagall went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one walk.
Watson ended the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Wilson was also 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run.
Carroll reached the bases twice on errors and once on a walk, scoring two runs.
CM scored their lone run in the top of the fifth inning.
HHS (1-1, 1-1) will play again on Monday, April 5 as they will take on county rival McClain at 5 p.m. at Shaffer Park.
