Rebounding and turnovers proved to be too much for the Hillsboro Indians to overcome Monday against league rival Chillicothe, as they fell by a score of 52-39 on their home court.

HHS (0-10, 3-14) committed 20 turnovers, compared to eight by the visiting Cavaliers, and the rebounding was one-sided as well in favor of CHS (6-2, 10-7), as those were two keys to the South Central Ohio League loss for the Indians.

The score was tied twice in the first half at 2-2 and 11-11, as HHS held the lead on two occasions in the first quarter but failed to take the lead from the 2:39 mark in the first until the final buzzer sounded.

"Turnovers were the biggest difference," HHS head coach Brett Prince said. "We had five offensive rebounds (CHS had nine). We gave them 16 extra possessions, and you cannot give a more talented team 16 extra possessions.

"All we have to do is score on 30 percent of those, and that is the difference in the game, so it is all about turnovers and offensive rebounds."

HHS tied the score at 2-2 with a layup by Latrell Haithcock at the 6:10 mark of the first frame, then took the lead off a 3-pointer from Zach Young with 5:22 left in the opening quarter for a 5-2 advantage.

Young led HHS with 16 points.

The next time the Indians took the lead was with 2:54 left in the first off a layup by Haithcock for a 9-8 advantage. HHS lost the lead off a backer by Tommy Bolte off an offensive rebound.

Bolte led all scorers with 28 points.

"Our game plan was to not let him catch it, but he caught it whenever he wanted it," Prince said. "We just didn't have anybody that can guard him. He's the best player in the league."

CHS ended the first with an 18-11 advantage by finishing the quarter with a 7-0 run.

At halftime, the Indians trailed 28-18 after being outscored 10-7 in the second with Austin Bagshaw scoring three of those seven points off a 3-pointer with 3:42 left on the scoreboard as HHS trailed 24-13 at that point in the game.

Also adding points for HHS in the quarter were Young, Austin Stevens and D.J. Brown who ended the game as the second-highest scorer for HHS with eight points.

The Cavs managed to win the next two quarters with a 9-8 third frame and a fourth quarter of 15-13.

In the third, Bagshaw sank his second 3-pointer with 39.0 left in the quarter, bringing the Indians within 11 points of the Cavs. HHS trailed 37-26 after three quarters.

For the HHS fourth, Young scored nine of the 13 points, including his second 3-pointer of the SCOL contest with 2:57 remaining in the game. Trey Moberly and Brown also scored points in the fourth for the Indians.

In the third, the Cavs saw Bolte held to two points, but he made up for it in the fourth by scoring 12 points, including two 3-pointers.

At the free-throw line, the Cavs finished 9-of-11 while HHS went 5-of-6.

The Indians have had a couple of their top seven players out of the lineup for various reasons the past few games, but Prince said being undermanned isn't an excuse for turnovers and lack of rebounding.

"We are undermanned, and our sixth or seventh man has a back injury, but undermanned doesn't turn the ball over or not box out," Prince said. "Sure, we probably get a little bit tired, but we should be used to it by now.

"There are no excuses … take care of the ball and box out."

The Indians are scheduled to play on Tuesday as they host the Washington Blue Lions in SCOL play. Chillicothe is also scheduled to play on Tuesday, traveling to McClain for an SCOL game.

In JV play on Monday, CHS defeated the Indians, 45-21. Tyreke Captain led HHS with five points.

The freshman game saw CHS defeat HHS, 33-24. Sajoun Jones led HHS with 13 points.
