HILLSBORO — The battle for the South Central Ohio League title will continue later on this season in Greenfield.
Not much was settled on Thursday evening at Richards Memorial Field in Hillsboro between cross-county rivals McClain and Hillsboro.
The top two teams in the SCOL tied at 1-1 with the Tigers and Indians scoring the same amount of goals in the 80-minute regulation.
Both teams were physically and mentally exhausted once the final horn sounded, playing under the 90-plus degree heat with the early lead in the SCOL on the line.
"I knew John (Weber) and Hillsboro would be tough to play here," McClain coach Shawn Jackson said. "We came out flat again in the first half, and finally got it back in the second half."
The tie puts McClain at 2-0-1 in the SCOL and Hillsboro at 3-0-1 in league play. HHS has defeated Clinton-Massie, Miami Trace and Washington in league matches. The Tigers have defeated London and Madison-Plains in SCOL matches.
Hillsboro's first goal came at the 34:00 mark of the first half with junior Jonathan Jacky scoring with the assist from junior Jordan O'Connor.
McClain tied the game in the second half with a header goal from senior Sam Henry with 30:37 left in the match.
That was all the scoring for either team, but both teams had other opportunities to score in the second half, but nothing got past either MHS keeper senior Ryan Case or HHS keeper Corey Walker.
One of the biggest moments of the match came with 26:54 left in the second half when Case made a diving save in the right corner of the goal on a Hillsboro penalty kick.
"If their keeper doesn't make an excellent save, we win 2-1," Hillsboro coach John Weber said. "This game was between the best two teams in the SCOL, and it was pretty even to me.
"We had solid defense (Thursday), and a big key for us was keeping the Rivas brothers scoreless, which is a tough thing to do," Weber said.
The rematch between the Tigers and Indians will be on Sept. 27, the late game at McClain Field.
"I'll take a tie," Jackson said. "I expect the same type of game when they come to Greenfield.
"This was the type of game I expected … It was a battle, and I don't expect anything differently again because Hillsboro has a very good team."
Overall, the Indians are 3-1-1 and the Tigers are 4-0-1.
"The first half was us and the second half was them," Weber said. "It will be a heck of a battle at their place."
HHS will play again on Saturday at Wilmington, and the Tigers will play again on Thursday, Sept. 8 at Gardner Park in Washington C.H.
