The Hillsboro Indians had some hitting woes on Monday evening to start a long week of four straight days of baseball, as they were held to three hits in a 4-1 loss to the rising Wilmington Hurricane in South Central Ohio League play at Shaffer Park.

Hillsboro (5-8) scored their lone run in the bottom half of the fifth inning, breaking up the shutout. The Indians opened the inning with Cayse Cameron being hit by a pitch. From there, Jonah Humphries singled to centerfield.

Eventually, the Tribe had runners on second and third with one out, and that is when Mason Stanley hit an RBI base hit past the second baseman to score Cameron from third base. Following that hit, the Indians ended the inning with two outs and didn’t gain a hit or base runner for the remainder of the game, as their next eight batters were retired in order.

The first hit of the game for the Indians came off the bat of Jacob DeAtley.

“You have to hit, it is simple as that,” HHS head coach Tim Hunt said. “We didn’t do that today, and to be honest, we haven’t hit well our past three games as we were swept by Little Miami on Saturday, where we had eight hits combined on that day.

“Their pitcher did a good job and kept us off-balanced, but we just have to put the ball in play hard, instead of hitting fly balls.”

As for the Hurricane, they scored one run in the top of the first, followed by one run each in the third, fourth and fifth innings for the eventual SCOL victory.

The loss for the Indians was charged to Cameron. In 6.1 innings, he allowed four runs (one earned) on eight hits and just one walk. He finished with six strikeouts against Wilmington. Jacob Helterbrand picked 0.2 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on no hits and no walks. Helterbrand finished with two strikeouts.

Cameron threw a total of 99 pitches, facing 29 batters.

“Cayse pitched well enough to win,” Hunt said.

Brad Keller of Wilmington was the winning pitcher, going all seven innings. He threw 105 pitches, where he allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk. Keller totaled eight strikeouts and hit two batters, facing 27 on the night.

The Indians return to the field on Tuesday for a non-league game against the Adena Warriors at Shaffer Park beginning at 5 p.m.
