COLUMBUS — Hillsboro junior Lane Cluff wrestled in his second OHSAA Division II State Wrestling Tournament on Thursday evening, where his season came to a close.

Though a win didn’t come for the Hillsboro junior at state this season, Cluff had a season to remember and even build on, as he had his best win total in his high school career. He finishes with an overall record of 45-6, winning a SE District Sectional championship. Cluff was also a district runner-up this season in Division II for the second consecutive year.

Also for Cluff, his career record now stands at 100-27 overall.

“The first match, the kid was obviously better than me, and in the second match I did a few dumb things. I couldn’t get off bottom, and it just came back and caught us. If I just get back up, it is a different match,” Cluff said.

Cluff’s first-round championship preliminary match saw him face Minerva senior Travis Kuttler, where the Hillsboro junior lost by pin fall with 51 seconds left in the match (1:09). Before the pin fall loss, Kuttler (42-7) held a 2-0 score over Cluff.

The match in the first round didn’t go in Cluff’s favor as Kuttler kept the match standing, not allowing Cluff to gain an attack at the legs. The two wrestlers wrestled standing for a majority of the match, but Kuttler got the match to the ground where he took control and gained the pin.

The second match of the tournament in the first consolation round for Cluff was against Lima Shawnee senior Bobby Grothjan (32-6), where Cluff lost in round two by pin fall with 58 seconds (3:02) left on the clock.

In Cluff’s first consolation match, he held an early 2-0 lead in the first round following a takedown, but a series of maneuvers by Grothjan left the Lima Shawnee senior ahead 5-2 after the first two-minute round.

The second round of the match began with Cluff on the ground, and Grothjan was able to gain control of the pace to eventually flip Cluff — who battled strong start to finish — for the pin.

Though Cluff didn’t have the results he wanted at state this season, he said it was still a good year and that he’s ready to work for next season.

“I still have one big tournament left this year at the end of the month, and then it is all preparation for next season. For the most part, I got what I wanted out of this season,” Cluff said. “I would have liked to come up here and win a match or two and place, but sometimes you just get out-wrestled by better wrestlers. I think that is part of what happened here today.”
