The Hillsboro Indians hosted their first home match of the 2017-18 season, and they defended their home mat in convincing fashion, defeating Frontier Athletic Conference foe Chillicothe by a 45-22 score.

In all, there were seven total matches, two double forfeits (106, 145), one win by CHS via forfeit (220) and five Hillsboro wins by forfeit (113, 126, 132, 138, 160).

“Anytime you win a match at home, it is a good thing,” HHS wrestling coach Greg Rhoads said. “Obviously we matched up well with them with guys in the upper weights. Our guys are getting in shape and they are making progress each week, and that is good to see.

“We have a team full of freshmen, most of whom haven’t wrestled before, so we are working on little tendencies that set you apart from other people. Again, we are getting better each week, and I’m happy with it.”

The first match of the evening saw Hillsboro’s Wyatt Wilkin win his 170-pound match over H. James of Chillicothe by pin fall in the first round. Next saw Chillicothe’s Nick Erslan defeat Richard Adkins of HHS by major decision at 13-5 in the 182-pound weight class. In the 195-pound match, Deegan Boris (HHS) defeated Collin Lindsey (CHS) with a 3-1 decision.

The Cavs gained a win with Cole Maxson winning via forfeit in the 220 pound match. Next, the Indians answered with a win at the 285 pound match, as Lane Cluff won with a pin fall in the first round over Nick Colley.

The 106 pound match was a double forfeit, and Bryce Stanley of Hillsboro gained a win by forfeit at 113 pounds. The 120 pound match saw Caleb Lake of Chillicothe win by a third-round pin fall over Isaac Lewis of Hillsboro.

There was a run of forfeit wins for HHS, as the 126 pound match had Wade Remsing win via forfeit, followed by James Coday (132) and Scott Eastes (138) also winning via forfeit. The 145 pound match was a double forfeit. McKellan Lee of CHS defeated Logan Hester in the 152 pound match with a pin fall, and Mason Lewis (HHS) won via forfeit at 160 pounds.

Rhoads spoke more about his team and their season thus far.

“We have kids who have never wrestled before, and to have them to the point they are right now, we are happy with that,” Rhoads said. “We want to thank the community for coming out and supporting us. We are on our way up, and I’m glad everyone got to watch us tonight.”

Next for the Indians is a two-day event on Friday, Dec. 29 and Saturday, Dec. 30 at Western Brown.
